The <ENTER> key is designed to give you a bit of extra spacing between paragraphs. When you write a post, just keep typing until you want to start a new paragraph. Within a paragraph, the text will automatically wrap to fit the screen and the posting window. Then, when you want to start a new paragraph...

...hit the enter key and this happens. A new paragraph with proper spacing.

If you absolutely want to get rid of this, holding the <SHIFT> key down while hit enter will give you just a line break
which can make your post
end up looking pretty bad if you're
not careful.

Rich, thanks for the tip to hold the Shift Key while pressing Enter to get a single line return.

Wondering how to eliminate the double return when replying on my iPhone, I discovered that pressing the up arrow button (like one would do to type a single capital letter) prior to pressing the [return] button will also accomplish a single return.

Like
so.
Thanks again.

Why? If you’re typing a normal message (not a list) there is no need to eliminate the double space between paragraphs.

Good tip.  It is good for when you want a list

No, that is not the correct way to build a list. You should use one of the the LIST tools to build a list. Those tools are at the right end of the posting tool bar and look like this:

  • if you want to build an “Unordered List” you use the tool with the dots.
  • That tool gives you a bulleted list, also called an Unordered List.
  • It looks like this.

I you want to build an “Ordered “List” use the icon with the numbers.

  1. That tool gives you a numbered list.
  2. Numbers are helpful if you are giving some instructions.
  3. Everything in the list is numbered.
  4. To end the list just hit the enter key twice…

…and you end the list.

Easy.

Rich, my original reply was a poor example of how I may want to use this feature; rather simply trying to offer a useful corollary to the tip which you had already offered.

I can think of several reasons why I would want to eliminate the default double-line return without using the formatting tools provided to PC users:

A) I may want to place someone's reply bubble intact from a screen grab just below their @Forum_Username (as demonstrated above)
    1)Since your reply to me was within my Quote box,
    2)If I were to "Reply With Quote" your response to my Reply would not be automatically captured in my follow-up reply;
B) I may want to make a list with letters (like this one), which may or may not also include numbers and/or bullet points;
C) I may want to reply from my phone where the formatting tools (as can be seen from a windows PC and shown below) seem to be unavailable on my iPhone screen.

In my opinion, people of different backgrounds and generations like to have different options in how they choose to communicate.  Some would prefer to have the freedom to choose their own writing style, which may be different than that which was taught to some of us in school as "the" correct way.

Rich, I hope this answers your question.  And again thank you for the tip about using Shift+Enter.  It offers more flexibility in one's responses.
