Hello everyone.  I require some assistance in removing the shell of my Shay 6-28022 engine.  After many years of wonderful trouble free service the smoke unit finally requires service.   I have not been able to locate any information on servicing this engine.  There are many screws on the underside of the engine and I am speculating that there may be a couple of hidden screws or some sort of interlock keeping the shell attached.  If anyone has a diagram or other instructions on how to remove the shell I would greatly appreciate a copy.

Thank you,

Jeffrey

I have no idea, but is it possible to call up Lionel Support for something like this and they would send you a pdf or something?  I really don't know if the 'new' Lionel provides that type of customer service.  I've been satisfied with the phone support I've received, but that was on sales and warranty service.  I mean, it's worth a shot.  The worst that can happen is they say they don't do that.

Jeffery,

It has been a while since I have removed the shell on a shay locomotive.  The info here is for the 6-18023 shay from 1992, but I believe it is basically the same body configuration.  I have included the schematic and parts list for 6-18023.  I hope they are readable !  They may apply reasonably well here.

A few things I remember: 1) it is VERY tight, and 2) LOOSENING (not removing) the valve block assembly helps with removing and reattaching shell.

It may be that there is only two body screws, as shown in the first picture.  I would try that first.

The second and third pictures show the valve block assembly screws.  I believe I loosened them to give a little relief when I reattached the shell.

Hope this helps!
