I have completely stripped down to black plastic a diesel shell which I want to repaint in 490 (or 21916) Northern Pacific, Main Street of the Northwest colors. I have appropriate decals.

What type of paint should I use; acrylic or other ? Are matching colors available somewhere ? Should I apply undercoat ?

Thanks.

Leon.

I'm O 3r but process is the same.

If you have clean bare plastic first step is primer.

Depending on the paint you use it may alter the type primer.

I use Dupli-color automotive gray primer sealer. It is very fine grain and does not cover detail.

One note....I can not say Dupli-color will work with EVERY paint. I have not found a paint yet that reacts badly...but that is no guarantee.

I can usually find the color I need in spray cans......either Tamiya, Dupli-color or Krylon sprays.

A book can be written about painting trains......plenty of threads here on OGR to get you started.

Some custom paints.....

If you have never painted before you should practice on a junker car or other plastic item. You'll need to develop some airbrush skills before getting good results on a nice loco. Before the paint you should make sure you understand air brushes and have a suitable one? The Weaver scalecoat system is a good place to start, they have paint, thinners, and instructions available. ........DaveB

"I think I want to repaint it in a southern pacific livery. I'm new to repainting so what are some tips for doing this? I'm not quite sure how to get the orange stripe on it especially in front where it curves into a "Y" shape."

Check out Des Plaines hobby shop for Microscale decals, they made SP loco decals that include the stripes and nose colors......DaveB

Do be careful what paint you use on ACG's plastic; some of it is quite sensitive to strong solvents. I would stick to the modeling paints. As for the orange stripe, I'm not certain what size strip you are looking for, but one way to do it is to paint the stripe area the color of the stripe (orange, in this case) then mask the stripe with striping masking tape--it comes quite narrow and is designed to not stick TOO hard. if the paint is solidly attached to the plastic, it should work.  scuff up the paint lightly so you get good adhesion and paint the body color (black/grey??) When that paint is dry, carefully peel off the tape and there's your stripe! That's how I did the silver strips on this loco.
