I just picked up a Marx black litho 897 steam locomotive in a lot with several other pieces I wanted.  The prewar single reduction motor has a few things that need some attention.

It is missing one pick up shoe for a prewar type motor

Shoe

One wheel is starting to crack and chip

Wheel

It needs a new light bulb

It needs to be lubricated (the motor works but struggles)

Is it possible to replace the wheels (it is not a geared drive wheel)?  Is it worth it or is it better to just get a replacement motor?

Also, what kind of lubricant should I use on the gears and axles?

Thanks.

Motor oil is fine. Flush the bearings with solvent and or repeated oilings till the oil stays clean for a bit ..  A running motor can be a safer bet as you never know a wheels fit until it is in hand. But wheels often have to be pulled to get to the armature for dressing.... which is another area to look at, and at least clean if is sluggish. The thing will likely run fine. I have worse that do (below)

For Marx parts Robert Grossman Co. out of ohio is one of the best. Wheels would be used, nobody makes them (if I'm wrong, Hennings would likely be the savior)
