I apologize in advance if this topic has already been addressed: one of the light bulbs in my R-27 subway set is burned out (see attached photo). Can someone tell me what type of bulb it is so I can locate a replacement? I know people recommend replacing the bulbs with LED's, but right now the bulb looks like an easy fix and I'm not ready to swap the bulbs for LED's. Thanks.

I believe the Lionel Part Number for the Lamp is 610-8049-300 which is a 14V 80ma bulb.

Lionel does list the bulb as being in stock, so it looks like if you are planning to order in the upcoming 50% parts sale, you could tack some on to your order.

Note that you can also get the whole replacement light board (presumably with the lights already attached). Since one bulb went, the rest may not be far behind.

Another source for the bulb would be Town and Country Hobbies as they also have them listed:

And finally, service notes from the manual:

bmoran4,

Thanks for posting this.  In my opinion it's a (very?) rare example of a nicely detailed description posted in a Lionel owner's manual.  I'm pleasantly surprised.

A little constructive criticism for Lionel, with the best of intentions along the way:  When you get to the point where you've read hundreds of them over the years you realize that they are usually operationally useful, so at least you can get started with using the product.  But they very often do not go into enough detail to be technically useful.  Then again the situation is too often compounded by the presence of incorrect information that wasn't caught in the review process before publication.

To be fair this is not an unusual situation.  Have you tried reading your car's owner's manual?  Whether your car is a classic or brand new, its manual will also usually come up short.  In spite of being over 200 pages mine can't tell me how to reset my car's oil-change-needed warning message after an oil change.

These characteristics leave too many people who read manuals with more questions than answers afterward.

Conversely, this subway car example is unusually well written for Lionel, primarily because it carries the kind of extra detail that many people would like to see in an owner's manual, but that is most often missing.

My thanks, to the unnamed person who wrote it, for a job well done.

Mike

Ordered spare bulbs from Town & Country and put them in no problem. 😊

As a backup, I also ordered a spare board from Lionel with the two bulbs pre-installed. Came fast, but I was disappointed to see that one of the bulbs (the one on the left in the pic) had two giant blobs of solder on the leads, and that one of the leads was broken. The packing slip said that Lionel inspects and tests its parts before sending them, but I can't imagine that this one passed inspection. I'm going to fix it myself because I could use the practice and because it's easier, simpler and cheaper than packing it up and sending it back. I'm mentioning it here just to alert Lionel that such things are happening.20210917_121626

some people may know the bulb by the car ID, For others who want to help, please post a better picture. Regarding LEDs, you can replace them one-by-one, as the incandescent burn out. That's what If would do.
