I've always been intrigued by the sensors Lionel used on their old RailSounds locomotives to change the chuff rate or diesel RPM in the early 90's.

Though, I recently tried to rewire one of the hall effect sensors to a replacement board. This board had green, blue and yellow wires in that order from left to right. The old sensor had black, white and red wires from left to right (at least how they attached to the board). You'd think that just making sure the wires were going back to the right spots, everything would be fine.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any chuffing spinning the magnet-equipped wheel after rewiring. I don't know if there are any acceptable replacement sesnors or brackets out there, or if Lionel even carries them, but I think this is the last thing I need to fix (aside from a new amp) on one of my upgrades.

Chuck,

If it helps, the bracket's part number is 691-8018-T-35. The downside is that bracket and sensors used thinner wires and the colors were red, white and black.

If a suitable substitute alone is at your disposal, I'm pretty sure it can get the sensor with the green, blue and yellow wires into it and get it to work.

Apparently the 18018 Southern used a unique sensor and bracket assembly for the early 2-8-2's which I don't have.

I have the standard 8000-T87 sensor and a bracket for a four wheel freight truck. You could possibly modify the bracket to fit the four wheel tender truck.

Thanks Chuck. I'm sure I can get that to work physically. I'm not sure if the unique wiring or something else was needed for the Mikados (other than the thinner, differently colored wires), but as long as the chuffing works like it should again, I won't be complaining.

I'll send you an Email.

Welp, the Hall effect sensor on my scale Hudson (item 18005) decided to quit and not chuff anymore when the locomotive moves...

I’ve sent Chuck an email again, but just in case if anyone has RailSounds 1.0 Hall effect sensors again, part no. 691-8000-T87), I’d gladly take them!

For future references, I also found these pieces on the Lionel parts website, 691-8042-T87. Would these also be acceptable substitutes for RS1 boards? They look almost exactly the same as the original 691-8000-T87 ones.
