I just tried to power up my MTH Rock Island Rocket E-6 diesel set (20-2358-1). A bad electrical smell started coming from the lead A unit. Sounds like a board issue. What's the best way to restore the engine? Lights came on but no motor or start up sounds. I was using a BCR. It has a 5 volt board set.

when you power it up does the engine draw  excessive current? and what voltage are you bringing the track voltage too? should be around .4 amps or less before powered up with track voltage is applied! 18 volts .  5 volt boards can fail anytime even if you let them sit along time between runs! i would take the engine apart and look at the capacitors if there swelled up the board is bad!

The caps actually don't need to be bulged to have a bad 5V board, I have a box full of examples.   Something I do to aid the health of still running 5V boards is replace the 330uf 35V cap if it's the WINCAP brand, half the boards I have in my dead box have that cap and it's bulged for most of them.  I have only seen one or two examples of other caps on the 5V boards leaking, that one brand seems to be the offender a lot of the time.
