I have an MTH Railking Proto 2 GP7 NY Central No. 5635 diesel,  Product # 30-20008-1, shown in photo below with original blue battery shown in 2nd photo below:

I want to replace that blue battery, which is fastened very tight in place with the black metal brace across its middle and top, with a 3 volt BCR2.

I tried to get that original battery out by wiggling it and pushing it from right to left (there is a space to its left), and by using a screw driver to slightly lift up the ends of that black metal brace in order to loosen it. However, although I loosened it a tiny bit, I have not gotten that battery out yet.

What do you recommend that I do to get that battery out?

I didn't want to force it too much for fear of breaking/damaging something.

My thinking is that the best way of getting that battery out is to use a screw driver and plyers to lift up both ends of that black metal brace a lot, and then pull the battery out towards me instead of pushing it from right to left. 

Another thought involves the beige/tan colored piece of insulation underneath the left side of the blue battery. I considered trying to remove that piece of insulation in order to loosen the battery. My concern is that said piece of insulation may be very important to prevent a short circuit if it turns out that I can't get that battery out. What do you think?

Thank you all for your contributions.

Since I could not find screws to loosen, which might have helped remove the battery, I decided to follow Josef"s advice. Using a screw driver and needle nose players, I bent the end of one side of the black metal brace upwards with firmness and extreme care, and was able to pull the battery towards me and get it out. Then I detached it and inserted the BCR2 and taped it in place.

Problem solved.

The good news is that it now starts up consistently. The bad news is that eventhough it's a Proto 2, it still runs like a Jack rabbit. 

I expected it to run slow and smooth like my other Proto 2 engine, which is the Railking Pennsy steam turbine.

I'm considering starting a new thread about Proto 2 engines, will first do a search
