I was able to pick up an CLW Southern Pacific SD40 from my friend in Campbell CA. Gary.

It runs rough. Needs to be taken apart cleaned and oiled.

Are there other can type motors available for these units?

Any ideas on how to get these to run slow and smooth?

Any upgrades or suggestions will be appreciated.

Get that done and re-evaluate before anything else.

Yes, but others will weigh in on that.

Once you have 1 & 2 done that might not be an issue.

Proceed forward step-wise.  Cleaning, getting the old lube out and replaced may solve a lot of issues very quickly.

That drive should be fairly smooth, even with an open frame motor

Something is rubbing / dragging / hung up

Can you pull the motor and turn the driveshafts on each one of the trucks by hand ? In doing this you can identify where the issue is - a rubbing cotter pin / dragging u joint / axle - bearing issue. If the trucks seem to turn freely, then run the motor by itself to see if there is a motor issue. As you break the drive down - sooner or later you will identify where the issue is.
