I used a LionChief board in a William's engine works fine.  But you need to watch the amps on the motors will burn out the board or not work if your motors draw to many amps.

You can find basic boards with a little hunting on the Lionel parts website. But you will not get all the extra speed control features unless you do a full LionChief + transplant from a Lionel engine!

As cited in the previous posts, converting a conventional K-Line engine to LC is doable. You would need to purchase a Lionel universal LC controller for operation. An alternative is to use one of the many available wireless control systems which use a smart device app for control which would mean no additional controller cost. Many of these other systems have extensive sound libraries and good lighting effects. Also, the systems that involve DCC have extensive engine motion control capabilities. The amount of retrofit installation work is approximately the same as for LC.
