I recently received a ROW  3-rail O gauge smoking caboose. It looks to be a very fine item, and I am glad I got it. I have one question regarding the smoke unit. I do not see an on/off switch anywhere on the caboose. Is this smoke unit OK at all times, even when it runs out of liquid smoke, or one chooses not to use the smoke unit? Is this a Suthe (sp?) smoke unit? Thanks.

Hi Jeff.  ROW made that model about 20 years ago if memory serves me correctly.  They came out with a couple nice brass locomotives and a line of three rail cars in the mid 90's. Your model features an "all or nothing" smoke unit that will remain on the entire time there is power to the track. Yes it is a Suethe unit and is rated at a maximum of 16-18 volts so be careful if you run TMCC or DCS as it will burn out if there is no fluid in it or the track power exceeds recommended voltage.  You can easily install an on/off switch on this if you desire but sadly, those old chimney type units were not the best when new and often needed replaced frequently due to the above mentioned conditions.  They are fun though so enjoy!

Thanks Mike for that information! This is a B&O caboose, interesting that it may have been made 20 years ago. It is a nice model. It would be smart to figure out how to put in a switch, and what type of switch, and where to install it so you can get at it. I will be careful with it, but perhaps it is better to not repair it once it burns out. Again...thanks!    Jeff

20 years ago? I think you need to add on another decade. 20 years is 1998. ROWI was gone by then and the OGR forum was in it's infancy.

1988 is more like it.

Thanks Lou. You must be the person who owned ROWI, or worked for them? I am glad you came forward with the technical information especially the the voltage regulator for the smoke unit!! I'll have to look for some of the "watery" Sluthe smoke fluid, as I have Lionel and JTs Mega Steam fluids.  Jeff

I was the electrical engineer who designed that kind of stuff; transformer, signals, sounds, etc.....

Actually, they came out with numerous steam locos, brass Alco PA ABA sets, a line of signals, a line of track (GG/Ross style), uncouplers, sound systems, modern and steam-era freight cars (the first 3RO container well cars I believe, and in scale). An early and major 3RO loss. The steamers (made by Ajin of Korea) ran well, had good gearing and were ground-breaking in the 3RO world. The brass (!) PA's ran well, too.
