I still have a ways to go on this but finally making progress.  It's an adventure working with those big microscale decals.  I had to use both the PA and FA set to do this engine.  Pilot is from Atlas parts and there will not be a front coupler on this engine.  All I really did was the pilot and I filled in the recession for the horn a little.IMG_1383

Wow that would look great on the three rail running gear I made to fit under my C-Liner.  Is the Stripe a decal or did you paint it?  I ran into a problem when trying to apply large decal stripes on an L&N Humming Bird scheme and ended up masking off the stripe and painting it on.  Been intending to make photos of the C-Liner chassis and put them on the forum.

I bought them on eBay and they have no markings on them. Did not specifically buy them for this project but when I got them the wheelbase just happened to be correct for the C-Liner. It took a lot of measuring and cutting to get them to pivot enough for O-42 without cutting the steps off.  I buy a lot of other peoples junk just to see what I can hack together. Haven't been to York in years but when I go I spend more time looking under tables than at what's on top.  I have been looking for a pair of trucks since the 80s to complete this project. Still don't know what I specifically need to be looking for. I even tried to take 6 wheel trucks and shorten the wheelbase to make a 4 wheel truck.  I never could get the gear train to run smooth though it does run. Doing machine work with my drill-press and files just can't quite deliver the precision needed for a gear train.  I plan to build a second dummy unit and do believe I can make the trucks for it. I have Three more stock Rivarossi C-Liners and would like to make a 5 axle AA.  I saved a photo off the internet of a 5 axle New Haven C-Liner  wearing McGinnis paint coupled to a Alco PA in a non-matching McGinnis scheme. that would make a very interesting pair. Another idea I've been toying around with is to rob a Williams powered PA of it's six wheel trucks and put them on the rear of two C-Liners and put dummy trucks on the front.  The Lionel PA trucks are a too long to pull this off without cutting the fuel tank too short to be prototypical.  I have been wrestling with what livery to paint the C-Liners and Toms paint job certainly is an inspiration.  Way to go Tom.     J

i used the Microscale NYC PA decals for the stripe but I had to cut them to get them to fit.  The stripes are longer than needed, I had to cut some of the stripe material to fill in around the steps where the decal was not the correct size without breaking.  So I have some little decal patches, but unless you know right where they are you can't tell.

In all but one picture I've seen the C liners had a different font for the lettering.  The font with the FA set is correct, but that decal set I had must have dried out since everything except the nose herald I used form that set came apart or tore.  So I used the PA NYC lettering, but it was not used commonly on that engine at least from the pictures I've seen.

Next time I am going to paint a stripe with Tamiya XF-19 sky grey.  It is an exact match to the PA decal grey.  I will decal over that painted grey stripe but I won't have to make the decal mosaic and touch up the steps or rivits that punch through the decal.  Those large decals are hard to work with (at least for me).  I've painted and lettered a lot more freight cars, so maybe it is just my inexperience with the big decals that is the problem.  I have used a lot of the micro sol products to snug the decals down too.

I plan to run this engine primarily at the RR Club layout so I left the plastic grabs as is.  It would have been much easier to decal if I had shaved them off and replaced them later with wire and next time I will try that too.

fronttopMaking some additional progress on the C Liner.  I finished the paint and decals and top coat and have modified the engine frame and painted it flat black.  I need to add the two power trucks (I modified them with mashima motors) install a headlight, and mount a rear KD coupler and it will be ready to go.
