New Project Announcement

    River Raisin Models announces the "Early Berkshire Project".  We have negotiated a great project with many different versions with our fantastic builder, Boo Rim Precision of South Korea.  These Lima built locomotives were ordered by the B&A and the B&M in 1925 as a result of the impressive showing of the A-1 Demonstrator 2-8-4.

     Due to the post WWII traffic boom in 1945 , the B&M sold 17 locomotives to the AT&SF and the SP.  Also, based on the success of the B&A #1433 tested on the TH&B in 1928, they ordered two similar engines from the Montreal Locomotive Works, #201 and #202.

 

RRM-1500 - B&A Class A-1a 2-8-4 (Numbers 1406, 1409) Elesco FWH, later Gothic lettering, black boiler, short tender.

 

RRM-1501 - B&A Class A-1b 2-8-4 (Numbers 1425, 1426) Elesco FWH, early RR Roman lettering, Green boiler, short tender.

 

RRM-1502 - B&A Class A-1b 2-8-4 (Numbers 1437, 1442) Elesco FWH, later Gothic lettering, black boiler, long NYC J-1c tender.

 

RRM-1503 - Boston & Maine Class T-1a 2-8-4 (Numbers 4004, 4012) Coffin FWH, pilot deck headlight, block lettering, four axle tender.

 

RRM-1504 - Boston & Maine Class T-1a 2-8-4 (Numbers 4017, 4018) Coffin FWH, pilot deck headlight, block lettering, large six axle welded tender.

 

RRM-1505 - AT&SF 2-8-4 (Number 4197, 4198)(ex B&M 4000 series) Coffin FWH, large six axle welded tender.

 

RRM-1506 - Southern Pacific 2-8-4 (Numbers 3505, 3506)(ex B&M 4000 series) Coffin FWH, four axle coal tender, large lettering.

 

RRM-1507 - Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo 2-8-4 (Number 201) (MLW), circa 1950’s.

 

RRM-1508 - Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo 2-8-4 (Number 202) (MLW), circa 1950’s.

 

RRM-1509 - Toronto Hamilton & Buffalo 2-8-4 (Number 202) (MLW), Gray Boiler, circa 1950’s.

 

     When sufficient reservations are received, River Raisin Models will execute the project with our builder, Boo Rim Precision of South Korea.  The preliminary pricing for these models is $2299 and the colored boiler models are $100 additional.  We are requesting a $400 deposit per model with each reservation.   I want to thank the Division Point Inc. and Owner, Jack Vansworth for sharing their design data with us. Photos of the prototype locomotives will be posted on the website soon.

If these models are as well done if not better than Division Points HO Berks they will be Key quality, considering the HO models were running in the 1600+ range last year this price is in line. Whether enough reservations come in to produce this model remains to be seen the HO models really went to the serious collectors market a relatively small custom production run, I would assume even fewer would be built for the S scale market.JMO

Not for serious brass collectors. Dan's models are a value for what you get. Often times his S scale models are less expensive than HO brass. Boo-Rim builds for Dan and SeHo builds some of the best brass models available anywhere. If you are in that market they are a good value IMHO.

I think we're all pretty much aware that few on this board will purchase a River Raisin locomotive.  Some have noted the price as being too high for their blood. 

 

I have no interest in this particular locomotive, even the Santa Fe version is too funky for me (now, if it were a Frisco Russian Decapod...) but as with anything in S, the RR Berks aren't a sure thing, it bears bringing the offering of the locomotive up in case someone IS interested and any discussion that follows.

 

And I'll say one thing about River Raisin products, you know they're going to run well right out of the box.  I watched two Flyer Legacy Y3's in a row fail on the test track at my LHS.

I will very interested to see if Dan gets enough orders to proceed. These early Berks are not a very popular engine from what I understand. I'm sure they will be spectacular models, but are there enough people that model S scale that are willing to pay the (fair) price for an early Berk? We shall see. I certainly wish Dan the best of luck.
