Although not original, I've found it much easier to use machine screws and lock nuts and/or washers. That way I can take it apart again if need be in the future. Since you don't really see the hardware, it works for me. I would say this rule applies more towards restorations or sets that get used for layout duty...

If I had a set that was very original in nice condition and the only thing wrong was a broken rivet or two, I would probably re-rivet it to make it right.
