hey guys I'm a rookie here and I have a dilemma and with that comes a lot of questions about the possibility of doing it. I don't know if it can be done nor do I have the experience to do it. But here it goes and my apologies for the long post that's about to ensue.

Okay so I have a late 90s Amtrak premier p42 o gauge engine. I read that it originally came with proto1 but I bought this used from a shop that had installed a tmcc and what I've come to find out is either an old school  f unit or a gp unit railsounds sound system (older emd of some kind) with Tmcc. I want to swap it to proto 2 or proto 3. I want it to sound like the engine I work with on a daily basis. And it just dosent sound right. with that said I had no idea what tmcc was when I bought it. Since then I've learned and updated my layout with a tmcc unit.

Now heres my dilemma, and I'm not big with the original protosound unit. Would rather do the p2/p3

A. Can it be done?

B. If so, how do I go about it? do I buy a newer railking engine and steal the guys out of it and put it in my premiere unit? ( I don't like the newer units they are small in comparison to mine, I like scale stuff)

C. Should I just try and find a way to go through mth? I called mth directly and they want 300 dollars for proto 3.0 and want me to mail it and them. They want to keep the protchip out of it (it's no longer proto it's tmcc) And with that said they won't touch it with other then mth stuff inside.

D.  Is there a cheaper alternative? That I overlooked that sells proto 2 /3 chipsets? It's either buy the railking p42 with proto 2 or buy the 3.0 from mth and try and find someone to install it since I've never done it and have no experience on doing a swap like that, let alone any work on model locomotives.

Thabk you very much for your help and again I'm sorry for the long post. I just want what I want.
