What do you railroaders from Canada and the North Centrl/Great Lakes/Northeast United States think about the ride quality of the track after winter sets in?

The only railroads I ever rode up north in winter were CNR, which was not too bad, and the Rock Island (Twin Star Rocket) which had rough track all year round. So, I have no real basis for comparison and I did not ride any locomotives on those trips.

So, does really good track turn really bad and then smooth out again in spring?
