I did some searches, but...

Is it actually true that if a friend is a new user of RR-Track (say on my recommendation) that he will get Version 5, but then he will NOT be able to share his ".rrt" files with me who has been a long time Version 4 user?

And that "the solution" suggested is that I pay more to upgrade to Version 5 so I can see the friend's files, but then I can't share my new files with any of my old Version 4 friends?

It sure would be nice if they made one last upgrade to Version 4 that would read and ignore any new features in the Ver5 format.

Or a utility that would read v5 and write v4 -- they have the code for that already, and it wouldn't bloat the v4 or v5 package with dual i/o engines.

I am in a similar situation.  I have a full version 3.  I have an upgrade to version 4 that looks for a version 3 installed.  Version 3 won't install  with windows 7.  Their answer was to buy the version 3 to 5 upgrade.  My problem is I don't desire to ugrade version 5.  The cost difference is minimal but it is the point of having to upgrade to version 5 that gets my goat.

Jim, you've probably already tried this.  Doesn't Windows 7 have something named compatibility or whatever so you can run older software versions?

Why can't software writers think about backwards compatiability issues and provide workarounds/converters/laying on of hands/ prayers etc so it works with older files?

Yep. RR-track 5 reads/edits/prints the earlier files just fine, but once you save it, it can't be read by version 4. Hopefully we'll see an export option soon.
