RRTrack Ver. 5.0 now available

Steve, didn't see the ad...do you know if there's an upgrade option for 4.x?

Glad you found it Don. For others, the upgrade from 4.02 to 5.0 is $39.00.

I recently got the upgrade from 4 to 5, but haven't had a chance to work with it much.

I'm still trying to figure out v4!!??

Do you if the add-on libraries purchased for version 4.x will work with Version 5 or must new libraries be purchased also?

New add-ons need to be purchased -- the 4.02's don't work with 5.0. I bought the O Gauge bundle with all the O gauge track libraries (including Atlas 2-rail) and bought the Miscellaneous Accessories package separately.

Also, 5.0 files can't be read by 4.02, so if you're sharing files with others, you need to keep 4.02 around. There's currently no export option for 5.0 to create files compatible with earlier versions.

Do the new libraries included stuff like the Mill House River turntables, all the new Ross Custom Turnouts??? Maybe the new Roundhouse that Dennis is coming out with????

You may want to check your software install My 4.0 libraries and files work fine with 5.0. All my track libraries (Original and purchased) They were all present after I did the upgrade. And my old plans from 4.02 all open up in 5.0

That is my experience as well. All of my add on libraries and 4.02 layouts all opened just fine in 5.0.

Sent an email to the RR Track people wrt version 4.x library add ons.
Answer was the 5.0 upgrade includes software to upgrade all attached libraries to version 5 also. It sounds like one does not need to purchase new add ons.

The big question regards the format of the saved plan file (*.rrt). Is it the same for both v4 and v5?

Is a plan file that has been saved using the v5 version, readable by a friend who only has the v4 program?

Or, alternatively, is there a "Save as" feature in v5 where one can chose to save in v4 format?

Typically RR-Track is downward compatible; it is not forward compatible.

Thus version 4 (or lower) track plans will work on version 5 until you save the plan under version 5. At that point, Version 5 track plans can only be read by version 5 or higher. Version 5 track plans cannot be read by version 4 or lower.

As to the libraries he usually has upgrades to the later versions.

If you want newer accessories to be in the libraries he has accommodated them if YOU are willing to send him the measurements that include a top view and track location center-lines. For 3D you need to sent in photos showing the item from each direction.

Does the new version allow for sharing? Such as when one person creates a layout and wants to send it to some else that also has the program. I never saw any way to do this in Ver 4. I should have said share something that can be modified by the second person, not just a picture.

That feature has always been available. Just attach the .rrt layout file to an email or upload as an attachment to the forum and anyone else with the same or higher version can open the file in RRTrack.

Well thanks Steve, anytime I tried this before I could never save a file anywhere but in the program folder. Then if I tried to find it using windows I could never find it. I just saved one and attached it to an email. Wahoo.

Not a problem at all. Just run Parallels Desktop on your Mac for those very few instances that require a Windows environment. Thankfully, I only have two such programs that fall into this category... RR-Track being one of them. I just installed V5 today, 'cause I really plan to retire our last Windows PC this year! I needed V5 since a re-install onto the Windows 7 environment in Parallels would have required my original RR-Track V3 installation (which I discovered isn't compatible with Windows 7 -- not to mention that RR-Track V3 was actually first distributed on 1.44MB diskettes about 15 years ago!!!) So I bit the bullet and ordered v5 and now have something I can install fresh from a new CD. It's a pleasure being able to now run RR-Track on a Mac. Runs like a champ so far. So yea... that Windows PC is now on borrowed time in our house!!!
