S Scale Frisco "Meteor" Northern

I just stumbled across this post. If you wanted a Frisco Meteor 4-8-4 but missed out on getting one here's a second chance.

The seller is a regular forum member and repair person. More than likely these will never be re-run by Lionel. I have no dog in this hunt...just a heads-up to fellow S gaugers.

You might be right about the Meteor not being rerun, and I regret selling mine, as it turned out it was my 7 year olds favorite engines and brings it up often that I sold it.

But, Lionel reran the flyerchief Berks (that first run sold out and many missed out) and I had talked with Lionel who told me there would definitely be another run of FlyerChief northerns (although no mention of the  meteor).  It would not surprise me if we saw a Frisco northern in 4500, I think there were a few notherns in real life painted up as the   Meteor.

Time will tell. Either way, the loco for sale up there is a good deal!

There were only three Frisco Northern's painted up in Meteor: 4500, 4501, 4502 and were oil burners.  4503-4514 and 4515-4524 were coal burners that got the Frisco Fast Freight treatment:

4-8-4 SLSF 4503

However, they also pulled passenger trains when needed:

4-8-4 SLSF 4506

Later on, all the fancy lettering was dropped:

4-8-4 SLSF 4503 2

Frisco fully dieselized in 1952.  All of the Northern's and a handful of others were held in reserve for Korean war service, but the call never came.  Beginning 1953 Frisco began donating locomotives to interested communities.  By 1956 most of Frisco's remaining steam locomotives were sent to scrap.

Every now and then I look at my second AM Northern and go "Hmmmm..."

Rusty,

I went "Hmmmm" a while ago and did this to my AM Northern.  Not a perfect Greenbriar, but as a quickie project, it's fine.  I stretched a Flyer tender by hacking up two of them, and with a little paint and decals, here it is:

So if you want to do the Meteor, have at it!  The only trouble with mine is that I have an extra SF style tender shell.  That's offset by the cab number which is actually a C&O number for one of their 4-8-4s.  Now, we expect to see your Meteor soon...!

Sorry, Jerry...  The old 'Round Tuit is overflowing and there's this little voice in my head saying:

Were all of the American Flyer 6-47259 Frisco Northerns equipped with BlueTooth, or only those sold in 2017? There is no mention of BlueTooth in the 2016 catalog where the Frisco Northern first appeared, BlueTooth is only mentioned in the 2017 catalog, although the item number remains the same for both catalogs.

I had three of the four northerns that were released. (Milwaukee, UP, and Frisco)  There was only one run of them, even though they were in more than one catalog.  All three of the northerns I had had the Bluetooth feature.

In one of notch 6 podcasts (I believe) someone from Lionel, I think it was Mike R, stated that the Flyer Northerns were some of the very first realeases from Lionel with Bluetooth.  And that it was a feature added after the catalog art was done, so there was no mention in the first catalog.

Thanks Ben,

I thought that was the case, but wasn’t sure, since my Berkshires have no BT. Apparently the artwork for the box may also have been done beforehand too, since there is no BT mentioned on the end flap of the box shown in the pictures, as well. The Frisco model is a beauty, it must look great with a string of American Models passenger cars that were made to match it. I wish I had more space on my small layout.
