The MTH rescue and veterans boxcars are now being blown out by Mike Wolf on the big auction site.

That's not surprising. They weren't even close to the prototype cars and more proof MTH doesn't even try to understand the S market.
Rusty
I spotted them the other day and had to order more of the veterans car after I got the first order.
Nice cars but if i had not seen them on E**y would known they existed!
Gunny
The cars are a good color scheme match for the real engines:
Even though we'll never see such engines in S scale from MTH that doesn't lessen the good looks of these cars. Hey with a pair of trucks at about $20.00 the price of these cars is too good to pass up. I think they look great!

Since it is the only S boxcar MTH has in its line-up... perhaps they are just fine for the majority of people whose priority is just to have cars with those decorations on them... regardless of whether they are "prototypical."

Let's put it this way:
These things were released 6-7 months ago and they didn't even make the "5 or less in stock" list. If they were just fine for the majority of the people who wanted boxcars with these decorations they wouldn't have wound up on the Bay at blow-out prices.
MTH must have recognized that in spite of the honorific decorations, these cars were losers for them.
Rusty
Since the TINPLATE line is soon going to be ending, Mike has to produce all the Modern cars from O scale line in the S scale line.

Well I guess that's one way to see it. Another might be... "We are doing these paint schemes in multiple scales...let's see how they do in S scale." said someone at MTH.
MTH has produced these paint schemes in HO, S, O and G scales. Under the theory that having released these cars MTH doesn't understand the S market we'd have to expand that to "MTH doesn't understand HO, S, O nor G scale". See these "First Responder" search pages beginning here.
Similarly the Veterans paint scheme appears in MTH HO, S, O and G scales. See the "Veteran's" search pages beginning here.
MTH painted these cars to match the SD60E engine prototypes (which appear to match the prototype engines). That's just common sense... prototypical or not. MTH is well versed in fantasy paint jobs so these cars do not surprise me.
The fact that few of the MTH releases match the prototypes has more to do with spreading the widest net for dollars than a fealty to realism.
When's the last time you saw one of these on the rails?:
an operating action (aquarium type) car. Think they sold any? I bet they did. In fact FEW of the MTH cars of this type in any scale match the prototypes. So, if it's a matter of "I don't like that" that's fine. But as to what sells (mostly) I'd leave that to the guy who has the manufacturing dollars at risk.
Funny thing is the S scale cars are still shown on the website at full retail price. That goes to show that what you don't know can hurt you dollar-wise.
I'm sure I'll enjoy running them prototypical or not probably behind my AF Illinois Terminal SD70Ace!
Now that's one funky train!

And my guess is they have not done well.

You're welcome! Any time I can spend someone else's money is a good day!
I too jumped on the $35.00 TOFC bandwagon. Don't ask me how much I spent!

Could it also be that they were poorly promoted & (obviously) never cataloged? It is weird how some gain so much satisfaction out of bashing & belittling items that are of no interest to them..... deeming them inappropriate for the entirety of the S gauge universe! If MTH had offered these in all other scales (which it has been pointed out that they did), but NOT S, some would be having a brain hemmorage over that... complaining that MTH is continuing to ignore & abandon S.
I think one catalog in the span of SIX years is a pretty good indicator of MTH's interest in S
Rusty
People keep saying that O gauge/O scale is too big for their house or apartment.
Then they should jump to S scale.

Don't think it hasn't crossed my mind lately.
