3 questions - does this bc have a 9 volt battery? And, if yes, how does it get replaced? (the doors are sealed shut). Also, volume is very low. Is there a volume control knob or switch? TIA.

This was one of the first diesel RailSounds (RS1) items produced from early 1990. There's no battery back-up, no volume control, and they're very quiet as you've learned.

The next generation, which came about a year later, was still RS1 but contained an add-on amplifier board that boosted the volume and included a control to adjust it.  It's part number 610-8007-110, and they can still be found in the marketplace.

A battery back-up doesn't enter into the equation until the introduction of RailSounds 2 in 1994.

Hope this helps.
