I model an industrial area......it has a lower density spur that has mixed ballast and more grass patches than the main line.....like John said above....it all depends on your theme.....since I have an ice house (and so, a lot of water around) I have more green around the ice house.....

On the next to last picture you will notice the junk (bathroom fixtures) that people dump along the ROW. The nice thing about scenery is that if you don't like the effect after the seven is built up, you can change it pretty easily.

Peter, is yours the only modular layout that uses Atlas track? I don't recall any others. Would love to see yours in person sometime as it is so nice. Since previously having ScaleTrax and now Atlas, I find the size of the ties of GG and Ross to appear so large as to be visually objectionable!

This scene below looks great and the track appears SO much more realistic with the ties in scale...
