on a boat, they are drains located at the stern.  if you open them up while underway, water that has accumulated on the deck will be forced out.  not sure what they have to do with trains.

cheers...gary

I know them as rooftop collection boxes but someone referred to them as scuppers so I thought maybe that was the proper name for a rooftop collection box

I'm lazy and predictable...

I most often use square styrene tubing and cocktail straws.

I cut a short length of the tubing (scupper).  Then I CA that to the end of a length of cocktail straw (drainpipe).  I make a notch cut in the tubing where the drainpipe will bend at the bottom end, insert a snug-fitting length of coreless solder to span the pipe bend area, and make the ~45-degree bend.  Paint, attach.

I'll also usually make about 3-4 fine brass wire loops with short tails around the drainpipe, drill some holes in the wall for the loop tails, and CA those into place as I mount the drain pipe.  Touch-up paint, weathering (rust, etc.) adds to the effect.

Not as good as a close-up, I know, but in the picture below, one of my scupper/drains has been attached to the right side of the back wall of this Downtown Deco wall....
