Received 3 of my 4 Wheeling & Lake Erie SD40-2’s recently and noticed the trucks are asymmetric - just like the prototype. Unreal the trucks were designed to replicate the 1:1 scale version. I’m guessing that was Jonathan’s research on this model. Seriously impressive homework there!

I also noticed a brake chain in the small plastic bag with screws and coupler springs. Has anyone attached this? It wasn’t as difficult as I thought. Yet another detail that could’ve been overlooked.

I would love to take all the credit, but the designers in Asia who do create 3D computer models of these locomotives in Solid Works do very high-quality work when given good information.  There are also several people who provided really valuable input on the prototype to pull these together throughout the long design process.  All-in-all a good team effort!  I'm glad the chain was provided with the model.

I'm happy with my 3rd Rail Mopac SD40-2s and from what I've seen these are the best models ever offered.  However, I would like to see improvements on some of the shell details to make these even better.

The SD40-2 radiator grilles are too flush with the body and should protrude with more depth on the corrugated ribs.  I'm working on an add-on grille similar to what I made for late GP38-2s that would go over the existing 3rd Rail SD40-2 grilles with very little work.

The outside of the SD40-2 air filter grilles are too thick and boxy and should be thinner - they remind me of MTH grilles.  That would be harder to correct and require some cutting, sanding and fitting a replacement grille.

The air tanks are recessed too far under the sill.

There are several Mopac paint and striping details that are wrong, so eventually mine will go into the shop for mods and repaint.  One error is fun - two different "2" font types on MP 3229, which has grown on me.

MP 3229

Not trying to disparage what is a successful release, however, I think updating some details would make the best O scale SD40-2 model into an even better scale replica.

Well, that is an interesting detail.  The numbering is easy to correct.  Not sure how that one made it past everyone.  I am aware of most of the other painting errors, but if you want to send me an email, I'd be happy to see if you have any additional ones.  Tooling is a little harder to change unfortunately for the number of units that will likely go forward on a 2nd run.

The different #2s are quite amusing. 🤔
