Just curious, but has anyone else ever experienced a humming sound when the unit is running or setting still. Sound could be on or off, still does it. If I turn the smoke switch off, it stops doing it. It's on my sd70 legacy.

It is the smoke unit fan.... But if you can hear it above the typical ambient noise of a layout room it might be the bushings in the fan motor are going bad. In our club we've seen this happen a few times, and if your humming starts sounding like a 1/64 scale 737 winding up for takeoff... Call Lionel and order 1 for install and 1 to keep in reserve. Smoke fan/motor assemblies are one part they seem to always have in stock.
Don't try to order traction tires because they don't have any.

Thanks Mark. I just noticed this one locomotive I have its gotten louder and louder to the point its too noticeable.
Nick, that makes sense. I noticed it's gotten louder and louder. I haven't had to open one of these SD70's up yet, how bad are they to change out?
They are easy to get to with the shell off. You may want to take the shell off and see if something has caused it to bind like the screw being loose that holds the fan in place.
I change out all of the smoke unit batting with the batting from the Lionel part store when I get a new loco. It smokes so much better with the after market batting. For the noise here is a youtube video of the fix. It is from a Lionel O scale engine but they are similar. Eric has a lot of great videos.
