Second run of Sunset SD7/9's

I would reserve the two SD7's and an SD9 [although I have two MTH ones]. I coudnt afford multiple units on the first run so I got the demo.

I just checked the website and did not find the SD7/9, only the GP7/9 listing and it was "for a possible second run" if enough reservations which is  understandable.

At the beginning of the post, it mentions PRR only for the SD7 not the SD9.    PRR had about 2 dozen SD9s but only 2 SD7s and the 7s were very rare.    The two SD7s were a special order with extra heavy ballast the line in Indiana down Madison Hill to the Ohio River.    This is a very steep line, I don't remember the grade but in RR terms much steeper than typical mainline outside of logging.    the two SD7s stayed on that line as far as I know.   

The Madison Hill SD7s could be done in PRR, PC & CR (if enough reservations)

There is footage of one of the Madison Hill CR SD7s working as a hump engine in Allentown yard

These were the only two SD7s that Conrail had

As with most Sunset runs, the road names and configurations are a little fluid to start so there will be changes.  I suspect the PRR SD9 will go on the list.  Like anything it is all contingent on meeting minimum order quantities to go forward. 

Jonathan, do you think the SP black widows will only be offered as SD7’s or will they also be available as SD9’s?

For anyone that has both SD9 and GP9 models from 3rd rail, how close are they on the gearing? I’d like to be able to mix and match between the two models. I think I’ll be adding a couple geep’s for the prospective 2nd run when I reserve some SD’s

For us PRR fans, its easy. Get both models! The PRR only had two SD7's.

Ah, the SDs...

16 miles north of me is Newport; about 8 miles east of Newport is Toledo. There is a huge Georgia Pacific mill there. Now being served by the Portland and Western, on the old Espee Toledo Branch that runs to Corvallis, about 50(?) miles inland.

Back in the Southern Pacific days, this line was served almost exclusively by SD units. Once a friend and I chased the "Toledo Hauler" along its route. Typically on the head end were 7 (yep 7) of these old things. I still have some black and white pictures someplace...🙂

Does anyone have a picture of the nickel plate road SD9 from the last run?

Again, it is all based on orders.  Gearing wise, they are all the same mechanism, so I don't see any issue mixing them in a consist.

Thanks for clarifying. Do you think the light package on the SP models will be the same as last time? Ash can headlights on the SD7 and 5 light cluster on the SD9?

Are these roadnames all re-runs? I cant seem to find the list of run 1 road names. Is unpainted an option?

Also, how are the shells assembled? Say someone wanted to chop the short hood... is the cab a separate part from the hood???

Any M&StL fans want to see an SD7 or GP7/9 in Red and white with a blue cab roof?

Just as FYI:  I asked Scott if he would add Conrail SD9s to the list.  He has.  Not sure if/when he'll post pictures on the main page, but it's on the reservations drop-down menu.  I've reserved a pair.  If others do, too, then they'll get made.

Yes but the new ones will have ESU decoders while the run 1 units had QSI.

Id like Scott to offer SD9s in Burlington Northern colors. Anyone else agree?

Looks like I'm not the only one living in two worlds here.

I bought a pair and went back and forth over which version to get (ended up getting the 3-rail). The plan is to upgrade the pilots on these since 3rd Rail did the right thing and included the parts to mount Kadees on the three rail units.

Which, if any, of the SD7s will be non-dynamic brakes? I'm looking to model Nevada Northern 401 and will likely need to have one custom painted, unless other people are interested in this gorgeous paint scheme.

I believe the roof panel can be either dynamic brake, or not.  Pops off, to access TMCC controls.  My model, from the previous production run.
