My cousin just gave me an old 1947 American Flyer manual and might soon give me his father's freight outfit. Of course as soon as I heard this I started brainstorming a small layout. Something point A to point B. Maybe a shelf layout. Nothing too simple, just buying a Reading dockside switcher and some cars and buildings. The question I want others to comment on is should I do this? This is going in the same room as a 1990's HO layout and a lionel postwar/prewar layout.

My take is what have you got to lose. I would suggest that you check the locomotive out and be sure you can get it to run reliably. from your post, having an HO and Lionel layout now you have most likely done repair and maintenance on those. Flyer stuff is no more difficult to fix then any other toy trains, enjoy it, all trains are fun to operate.

The only way you're really going to know is to try it. The Flyer docksider, a couple of freight cars and some track would be a minimal investment (lees if you scour the used market) to become familiar with S.
