I have a 2343 with one motor.  IT's a A unit, B unit set with freight cars.  I am trying to get the set number and the type of freight cars that came with the set.  Additionally, The engine pulls almost as well as my 2 motor 2353, so I am wondering if it would pull at dummy A unit alone with the B unit and all the cars.

Thanks, Cliff

No, it's a 2343.  Lionel brought out the 2333 Santa Fe without Magna traction, and then the 2343 with Magna traction, screens in the top, and hand rails on the front.  The next set was the 2353 with Magna traction and no screens or hand rails on the front.   There are a lot of 2 motor engines of each kind.  I saw one post that said they sold single motor 2343s late in their production run probably at a reduced price.  I am trying to find out the set that I had as a child.  I now have a bunch of freight cars and would like to see witch ones came with the set.  But more important is that the set of an A unit and B unit run almost as well as my 2353 2 motor engine.  So I think I could add a dummy A unit and it would perform fine, but I thought I would test the forum for more information.

The only single horizontal motor F3s that is documented is the 2245 Texas Special, and that was only until they morphed it to a single vertical motor under the same number in 1955. This was the cost reduced transition to the vertical motors that you talk about. Additionally, the 2343 was never in a set as an AB. Only AA or ABA.

Since we can't agree on the locomotive, lets move on and see what other things we can use to figure things out. What year was the set gifted? What are some of your cars you think made up the set? These other pieces of information may help things fall into place.

I checked my Lionel postwar f3 book by Joe Algozzini and found a article about economy f3s the author found a ad in November 1950 Model Railroader from Fisher’s hobby service of Louisville, KY. That offered a Santa Fe or NYC f3 with single motor. This may be what you have.

This would be very interesting to piece together! If @kiehlclifford really does have something like this and has provenance and such that it lines up with documentation such as the Model Railroader Ad, it would be great to get this variation recognized in the Greenberg books and similar.

If the locomotive happens to have a heritage like this, one can't expect it that it would make up a consist conforming to any Lionel cataloged set.

I don't happen to have the November 1950 issue of Model Railroader to put eyes on the advertisement.
