On O gauge motors, an undersized drill bit to ream the bushing then small vise grips to squeeze (eggshape) collapse the old bushing. By undersized bit, is meant that you don't want a bit that is too big and will damage the original hole size.

Install the bushing first before using a reamer to open up the hole to final dimension.

Squeezing the bushing will distort the hole; thus the need to ream it after installation.

To be clear for Jim, I ream the old bushings and visegrip them out. No drills or grips for the new ones.

Thanks for the replies.I got the bushing out easy enough and hole is the same size my problem is getting the new one in.Because of the field the one bushing is partially blocked.There is no way the bushing can go straight in.It looks like I have to drill out the studs holding the field to get any sort of room to install the bushing.I added pictures but they may be hard to see.

Maybe you can file a "flat" spot on the bushing where it meets the field.

After looking at this closer I cannot see another way around this than taking out the field windings.Hopefully I can loosen them enough so I can pry them up then fit the bushing and restake them.Another thought occured to me is that if I have to take out the winding and do not have enough metal to restake them I think I can drill and tap the stud to hold them in.I don't think it should affect them.I look at this as an experiment that I hope works because I have at least three other motors of this vintage that I have to replace bushings.Thanks for the help everyone I will let you know how it works out.
