From all the recent posts around here, better get them now before they run out again. Don't forget to order a box of batting while you're at it.
Thanks Marty,
I had put my order in about a week ago and just received 8 pieces
yesterday. I will now put another order in for more
Marty E, They seem much better to me, the two installed yesterday are very quite
and run well. I've been testing them all morning

Alex, only time will tell. I am on number 2 on my Cab Forward. BTW, not a fun job. The same motor used in high end locomotives is used in LC+. Phil has done a great job getting these out to guys who have them on order. Make sure you order plenty of the 8 inch wick material. Every job I do, I throw away the fiberglass pad they use. The 8 inch wicking rules.
Good to know. I was hiding mine like a squirrel before winter. Now I'll venture to use the only 2 I had left to replace the incredibly whiny/noisy fan motors on both my Legacy Mikados.

Lionel still has the pads. I get to see a lot of Lionel smoke unit work and will not use anything but the 8 inch wick. BTW MTH has a great rope wicking and the Lionel when it is Reaganized (shredded) works great in MTH smoke units.
Part Numbers For Both Motor and Wick Please?

When you remove the pads, do you wrap the rope around the element or ball up the shredded rope and pack it in and let the element sit on top of the wick? One more question.....What is the component beside the heating element in Lionel smoke units? Is it a overheating shut down device.?
Yes, the new component in later Legacy smoke units is a thermistor that senses the temperature.
John, I believe that is the same item in the TAS smoke unit. I have one in my Weaver I-5 steam locomotive. It works.

So what precautions need to be taken when changing from the pads to the rope wick in regards to this thermistor? Do you need to keep the wick away from this device? If the thermistor drops into the wick, will it cause premature shut offs of the smoke unit? I really don't like the pads either, but I wonder if Lionel needed the pads tobe able to use the thermistor. Any thoughts?
I had to move the thermistor a bit farther away from the resistor in my VL-BB to get the blowdown smoke working. The one for the whistle smoke was quite a bit farther away from the resistor, and that worked fine. I matched that spacing for the blowdown smoke, much better now.
Funny, was going to post when the doorbell rang. FedEx, now I have 10 pages of parts to go through! But I think MTH may be running out of smoke fans now. G
George, always order them whenever. Every MTH parts order I put in I throw in a couple of 5 packs.

Thank You G!!
Tried the part number for the smoke motors on Lionel's site. It doesn't come up at all. Part number incorrect?

Parallel threads. The part numbers are for MTH parts. You can't tell the players without a program.

Norton, the number for Lionel wicking is "691smkp008" no dashes or spaces.
you also have to select replacement part number or name in search field.
hope this helps
It was Patrick who was looking for MTH part numbers on the Lionel site, not surprisingly without sucess.

Hi Alex and other, this thread is confusing to my little brains. I have a few questions for you:
1.what is the lionel wick part #? I used what was suggested in this thread but could not find it on lionel site
2.What is the better wick? MTH or Lionel for steam and diesel smoke units of either company's locos?. confirm part numbers please.
3.What is the best smoke fan motor? MTH or Lionel? are either motors compatible with either company? for steam and diesel?
Seems like it is suggested to replace the factory wick almost automatically, is this true for MTH or Lionel? I found the MTH wick to be more robust than stock Lionel, what's your opinions guys?
Thx in advance.
Live long and smoke 'em away

Marty,
Better to stock up on Lionel units for when they fail or just go to the MTH piece?
Seems like MTH fans are better. The new MTH wick is thick.
The problem is Lionel has several variations of fan motors. Short tall, diagonal and horizontal holes. Based on how the smoke unit is crammed in the MTH might not fit.
MTH has only one O smoke fan and it is diagonal holes. G
