Hello all,
I have both Lionel and MTH Diesel and steam engines. I definitely do not want to burn a smoke unit out an is there a rule of thumb relative to when more fluid should be added? Obviously I don't want to add too much smoke unit also.

Yeah, watch how they smoke right after you fill them. Then run it until you see the smoke diminish. You just need to learn how each one smokes when they're freshly charged and how they smoke when they need a fill, all of my locks are a little different.
When it begins to smell really bad, like diesel exhaust and turns to an off white color and when the output lessens.
