Looking for fan driver smoke unit suggestions from those who have been down this road before. It's a scale sized Lionel 6-18056. Is there a smoke unit that's pretty much a drop in or close to it? It'll be getting GRJ's SC/CG combo to properly drive it.

Thanks!

Well, there's no fan driven smoke unit that's truly a "drop-in".

I use the MTH steam smoke unit with the short posts for TMCC or Legacy upgrades.  I bend a chunk of 1/16" aluminum sheet for fabricate a mounting bracket, and then solder a brass tube extension on the screw-in funnel.  I swap out the two 16 ohm resistors for a single 8 ohm resistor.

Probably a typo here.  GRJ usually recommends a 20 Ohm smoke resistor for TMCC Steam and 27 Ohms for TMCC Diesels.

John, is this the unit (or close to) you're refering to?

That's the PS/1 smoke unit, I typically use the PS/2 smoke unit as I'm adding the Super-Chuffer to manage the fan anyway.  I swap out the two 16 ohm resistors for one 20 ohm closest to the stack.  In the instance where I'm doing a Legacy conversion or TMCC with the smoke regulator, then I use an 8 ohm resistor.

Check ebay, there are a few listed for $30 with free shipping.

Be careful, if you're doing custom installs, you'll likely want to create a stack extension.  Most of those have fixed funnels, and soldering a brass tube to them usually loosens them from the PCB.  I buy the ones with the threaded stack, and the separate brass funnel.  I can solder my stack to the funnel and then screw it into the smoke unit.

@gunrunnerjohn, I  just ordered one from MTH similar to the one in your picture that was labelled for ps2 or 3  but it had a brass cup similar to the unit in my picture (though the cup in my pic is mostly not visible) for just that reason. I noticed the cups come in different shapes and sizes. The cup in my pic is threaded in. I'm hoping the one I ordered is threaded as well.

Excellent info. Thanks
