I'm starting to appreciate branch line rail roads.  Currently their are over 600 operating today.  Genesee & Wyoming oversee 190 + so there's lots to go around. I'm interested in the RJ COREMAN series that Lionel & MTH are releasing.

Fallen Flags   I would like a Cotton Belt Northern #819 ( can be run as an excursion train) and a RS3  or EMD  yard switcher.

Another vote for the Illinois Central City of New Orleans or the Panama Limited, either one is fine with me. Sunset 3rd Rail has listed the Illinois Central as one option for the E6 but no cars. I would be happy with a "generic" streamline set from GGD to go with the engines as I don't really think we will see a true scale version.

Charlie

I would like to put in a vote for the "GHAN".  It may be in Australia, but is a very nice and looong passenger consist that still runs today.  Just the fact it still runs is a good reason for having it.  As with most railroads, the story behind it being built, and how it came by it's name is an interesting story in itself.

Or the Delta Eagle, a short streamliner headed by #7100, an E6 with the rear engine removed to add a baggage compartment:

The Frisco Firefly:

NOTE:  for some reason, the text editor keeps disconnecting "(train)" in the Firefly URL, which results in linking to an article about bugs.  to get tot he article about the train, the entire URL needs to be typed in.  *sigh*  Ain't Komputurs SMART?

I'd Love to see Lionel re-make Weaver's Black Diamond or John Wilkes in vision line or any line.  It would be nice to see more issues of these beautiful locomotives, heck, even an Asa Packer would be welcome.

Black Diamond

John Wilkes

Asa Packer (I used the model because I haven't been able to find a pic of the real thing in color.)

North County Transit District (NCTD) offers services that are a vital part of San Diego’s regional transportation network. NCTD moves approximately 11 million passengers annually by providing public transportation for North San Diego County.

I would love to see the Bombardier bilevels, but apparently Lionel doesn't have that tooling.

Great suggestion, the only shorty steam set I can recall is the Lindbergh Special with the Atlantic and two 18" cars. For diesels MTH did the City of Miami as an E-6 and five 18" cars which is almost 9 feet long and Lionel did the 1948 Freedom Train ALCO PA and seven 18" cars which is about 12 feet long. These new scale sets with ten or twelve 21" cars have to be nearing 17 to 24 feet in length with motive power are just too long (and expensive) for us to even consider. The coming MTH CGW F unit and a few passenger cars would represent one of their short passenger trains.

Didn't Weaver do the locomotive, quite some years ago?

Hot Water,

Yes, over twenty years ago Weaver did make the locomotive you see above, brass, protosounds, high gloss paint, and a seuthe smoke unit.

prototypical 1960's+ Southern Crescent stainless cars to go with the E8's Scott did.

prototypical 1968ish CG Nancy Hanks II as seen in this photo on wikipedia...https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nancy_Hanks_(train) I am pretty sure Lionel has the tooling to do the dome car.  Just need to do a combine, grill-lounge, and some of those modern heavyweight coaches.

I'd also be in line for a few prototypical Southern Modernized HWT's in the post above.

Only caveat...no cookie cutter cars like the most recent Lionel Southern 21" cars (NYC ESE rebranded cars) or I won't buy. I have a list of 18 specific cars I will build or have built if nothing comes along.

  • Amtrak Cascades Talgo set
  • Seaboard "Gulf Wind" but for purely selfish reasons as it's the only passenger train that ever went through my hometown in Florida, as Amtrak didn't last long there and came back with the Sunset Limited for just a few years and now the town in again without passenger trains

I'd like to see accurate Southern Railway streamlined name trains. The Tennessean, The Southerner, and the Crescent. There's plenty of Southern Railway passenger diesels on the market to pull these trains and GG-1's also pulled all three between NYC and Washington DC. The N&W J's pulled The Tennessean between Lynchburg and Bristol, VA/TN.

I would take the gulf wind in a heartbeat, it was pulled by the L&N in Bay St. Louis MS, a town 20 mins south of we're I live now. Lionel is making the L&N hummingbird now, another gulf coast train; however the hummingbird turned north in mobile...

Yeah, the Gulf Wind was turned over to Seaboard I think at Chattahoochee, FL. They ran it through my hometown of Tallahassee on to Jacksonville.

I haven't lived there since 1998 and the railroad is even less travelled now through there than it was when I was a kid (I went back there about 7-8 years ago and the main was covered in weeds). CSX is now looking to sell off the entire line from Pensacola to Jax!

First   a Yellow Kid and an E2-3 to pull it

Second for the shorter crowd a East Wind,

3 PK70R coaches in beautiful Yellow and FOM for more sales

          1 New Haven Baggage

1 ACL Tavern lounge  in Yellow and Silver for later versions

1 New Haven Grill car  a really neat car

Motive power is a GG1, Multiple New Haven Electrics,   New Haven I4 and streamlined Hudson I5 and B&M R-1A,  B&M P-4A my personal favorite.

This train would be a winner.  I believe the cars could be sold as extras to the passenger crowd as well and later years consists were from multiple roads and not the same paint, thereby spreading the appeal.  The original In Canary yellow would get my money and probably every one else's.

Come on Scott with the recent tooling  this would be easy and quick and a seller.  Put it before the NP Northcoast please.   Most of the research is done in Excellent article Keystone Vol. 38, # 4.    I would hope this makes the short list of doable  and profitable.

As a big fan of the former Eastern RR's.   I would like to see Lackawanna's Phoebe Snow train reproduced. In general the market has not gone heavy on Eastern RR rolling stock, although a very major segment of the model train market is in the NE.   Reading, Central NJ, Lehigh Valley, Lackawanna, Erie, and Susquehanna cars and engines are not real easy to find

Nothing against the MTH East Wind. Careful examination of photos will show No relations other than paint scheme to the actual 6 car train.

According to Scott got to have a large enough order and the original canary should get it close and the cars themselves should appeal to passenger car fans in multiple other paint schemes thereby broadening the appeal.  Multiple engines from 4 different roads should add some spice, and latter years consists would add even more never been done car options, in  desirable roadnames currently modeled.

The Yellow Kid has a great article in Keystone unable to find my copy at this time, but it points out the inconsistencies in the Ho Westerfield kits they were close but not quite correct. Different years or something along those lines.

If your going to build it,  build it as close to the known photos as possible.  Nothing worse than obtaining a photo of your dream train and it doesn't come even close to the model you have.

Well, then the Goldenrod (Mobile - Selma - Birmingham service) would have to show up, too. After all, it was "Number 1". The Southern actually had several named railcar train sets like this; another was the Joe Wheeler.

The GM&O Rebel.

The original Rebel (GM&N, later GM&O) built by ACF; ALCO powered. A contemporary of the Zephyr, but a better design - it wasn't articulated; the cars could be switched in and out as in a heavyweight train. To be picky, Lionel actually "modeled" this train in the 1930's - O gauge Tinplate #1700(?); I've even heard collectors refer to it as "the Rebel":

GMNRebelACF-Chicago

The "Big Rebel" (not an official name) came later:

Poor shot, but this is the  southbound Rebel north of Mobile in 1940. The paint scheme is silver and crimson, as this was about 7 years before the GM&O bought the Alton RR, taking over their red/maroon scheme. I like the silver/crimson pretty well.

CNW Twin Cities 400. Of course, I'd need to get pair of E8's to pull it (or I could fake it with an F7 ABBA set instead).

Trinity Rail Express Bombardier cars. I have a set of MTH Metrolink cars I had thought about painting in that scheme.

Amtrak California Surfliner. K-line had a very accurate set of cars for this train. They've added a regular Superliner car to each train, some of which have been painted to match the Surfliner cars (look closely at the second car from the end).

3rd Rail is doing the as-built scheme for the E6s which are leading in this photo.  With the E8 being done in this scheme, a passenger train might be in the works to go with it.  I don't have any insider knowledge, but just a suspicion that this and other mid west name trains are in the future.

The Illinois Central's Hawkeye, Land-O-Corn and others:

Land O' Corn 1967 RockfordLoC@Genoa

Hawkeye@SiouxCity

Both Atlas O and MTH Rail King have issued IC GP9s but neither were numbered in the ranks of passenger locomotives nor were they equipped with "torpedo tanks".  Lionel has listed GP9s with torpedo tanks in their recent catalog but not in IC colors; MTH has offered GP9s with t-tanks, in the past, but not in IC colors.

MTH has issued a very handsome version of their 70' smooth sided passenger cars that make up a good looking train.  Replacement of the two axle trucks with their three axle "heavyweight" trucks brings the train's appearance much closer to the prototype AND provides "close coupling" even with the "claws" in place.

Therefore, it would seem that MTH would be the logical manufacturer of not only the IC GP9 (offering both Hi-Rail and Scale Wheel) but it would also be the logical builder of the first O Scale/Gauge Flexi-Van equipment which operated in many of the IC's GP9 powered trains.  The New York Central, Santa Fe and Milwaukee Road also operated Flexi-Van equipment, the history of which is quite interesting:

http://www.truckinginfo.com/bl...ermodal-history.aspx

The Flexi-Van was ahead of its time and, therefore, suffered an untimely demise.  The railroads' objections were to the specialized equipment needed and the number of extra rubber tired "bogies" needed at terminals.  Fortunately, we don't have any of those kinds of issues with containerization on the rails, today!

An update on the NP NCL - in 2001 K-line released an ABA and 6 car consist, with interiors. The cars were both 15” traditional and 21” “scale?” In the Loewy green scheme. So the major work has already been done. I’ve only seen pics of the 2-car set -baggage and combine, I don’t know what the 4-car pack included, but I’m guessing a coach, diner, short dome and observation. Oh PLEASE! Reissue this. My F’s look so lonely without a consist! in four years of looking I haven’t been able to put this set together.

K-line did the Streamline cars for the Phoebe Snow in 15 & 18 inch, but good like finding them. Weaver did the E8's, but the nose paint was wrong. MTH bought the E8 molds from Weaver, but MTH did the wrong road numbers and have not made them since.

So I would hope Bachmann would make the Phoebe Snow cars from the old K-line molds seeing how they own them now. Maybe MTH could do a run of JUST E8A units #810-820.

I will not hold breath for much of anything in DL&W, even though the market is not flooded with CORRECT DL&W.  I have the MTH proto 2/3 F3 ABA but it has a freight road number in passenger paint scheme with a mars light. I also have GGD heavyweights to match the F3's for a 1946 Lackawanna Limited in GMY paint.

Looks like MTH 2018 Vol. 2 has some beautiful 70' Premier NP passenger cars on page 134.  You could have 11 cars total if you wanted.

The MTH Northern Pacific passenger set has been issued a number of times in the past, and attractive as it is, it's still a generic set and not a truly accurate model of the North Coast Limited.  Even the K-line cars, though scale-length and as highly desired as they have become, are not accurate scale models of the NCL.  I'd prefer a true, scale version of the Loewy-designed Vista Dome NCL, both in car-length and detail on the order of the recently released Empire Builder by GGD, and I think it'd be very successful in its own right.

I mentioned it a while ago.  I'd rather see another steam version of it.  No one really seems to make LV steam that much.  Or at least in any great diversity.

How about the Milwaukee Road's Hiawatha of 1934?  From the research I've done, here on the Forum, Weaver's is the only accurate representation available but was released many years ago.  When they appear on eBay, they go fast and they go high, proving that there is a market out there for fine models.  Perhaps GGD would be interested, if Atlas/Lionel/MTH are not?
