This is the first time I have actually posted in the O gauge forum so here goes. I have a Premier O scale Big Boy (built circa 2005) and a Virginian Triplex, built around 2008. Both have PS2 and have been in storage in a climate friendly environment for approx. 9 years. When I stored them, they both worked perfectly and both have the BCR installed. Both locomotives were new. When I got them out, I charge the BCRs for approx. 1 minute. The Big Boy functioned perfectly except for the sound, it sounded like low volume static and the physical (blue) volume control does not respond at all when it is turned either to the left or the right. The Triplex, after charging it's BCR fired up and everything functioned correctly, including the sound. After nearly three weeks, I took it off the shelf to operate it again and when I put it on the track, it's sound suddenly did the same thing that the Big Boy did, sound small and static. The whistle, bell, chuffs, chatter talk, steam blow off, etc. all sounds are present but the quality of sound is terrible. These locomotives were built between 2004 and 2019. The Big Boy has a 2 watt speaker and I don't know what the Triplex has because I have not taken the shell off. Does my problem sound like speaker issues? or have my boards gone bad? I am not an electronics person so I don't want to go too deep into their electronics but I want to see if these issues are something I can address myself or if I need to send them to an MTH repair center.
