SPEAKER OPTIONS in MTH PS3 MOTORS

I think in certain applications, better results could be had. MTH did use an improved speaker after a certain year in most models. They use a very flat speaker in some tight spaced models that lacks sound quality.

I'm interested in trying something better in diesel switchers.

MTH uses a "decent" speaker, but you can certainly vastly improve on it if you want to spend the money and you have room for the speaker or speakers.  One upgrade is dual 8 ohm speakers with a lower bass response, that will make a significant difference.  OTOH, those speakers tend to be much taller than the stock MTH speaker, so they may not fit.

In many cases, adding a proper baffle will also do wonders for the volume and bass response, every situation is different.

I have not seen any improvement going dual speaker in parallel; seems the fact that current is cut in half per speaker they are under driven. G 

It depends on the speakers I would imagine.  With a fairly wimpy amplifier, many of the Lionel Legacy offerings use dual speakers and have what I consider to be the best sound of any major manufacturer's offerings.  I can certainly tell you that the VL-BB will certainly change your mind about dual speakers.

Lionel amps are much different, even from the early RS2 days.  I am speaking MTH engines.  I also see a significant difference going between a 4 and 8 ohm, versus a 8 and 16ohm.  Can't really explain it, but you can hear it.  G

hi I thought the newer ps2 n ps 3 boards had to be 4 ohms for the proper impedance match to the electronics amplifier out stage! any comments.

Alan, two 8 ohm speakers in parallel give you a 4 ohm impedance.
