Good afternoon all:

While checking out some information on LokSound DCC decoders and such, I looked into several different speaker setups for optimum sound in O scale motors.  While the DCC experiment is on hold for the foreseeable future, the speaker configuration options are still intriguing.  I am always looking to improve, and I am curious if anyone has bothered to replace the speakers in MTH PS3 locomotives with a improved system, such as this one from TDS or just leave them be.  I have done some research here and elsewhere, and I am aware of the engineering involved with speaker configurations.  The last thread I saw here on speaker configs was 2013, but I admit my search was not exhaustive.  If there is another good speaker thread I missed, please let me know.

Simply put, is there a benefit to be gained by replacing the PS3 speakers with 3rd party models?  Has anyone done it, and if so, what was the replacement?  The motors in question are PS3 AEM7s, E44s, E33s and TRAXX.  I am interested in a fuller sound, but not necessarily the bass response one might want in a steamer.  I know can find all sorts of actual 'information' on speaker installs, I am more interested in some opinions from the other audiophiles out there.

Thank you for the input.

MTH uses a "decent" speaker, but you can certainly vastly improve on it if you want to spend the money and you have room for the speaker or speakers.  One upgrade is dual 8 ohm speakers with a lower bass response, that will make a significant difference.  OTOH, those speakers tend to be much taller than the stock MTH speaker, so they may not fit.

In many cases, adding a proper baffle will also do wonders for the volume and bass response, every situation is different.
