Bob,

I seem to remember you were looking for some 80/81" drivers.  These aren't Lobaugh but they measure just about 81".  No bearings or gears on 3/16" axles.  Cast iron for sure and insulated on one side.  One wheel on each axle has been removed and just re-installed partially (for the photos).  Also, another question, I have a few universals that were in the Lobaugh box.  Are they from Rollin?

I can see the potential benefit in these spring universals.  But I'm curious... do they produce 'surging' at slower speeds as the coils wind and unwind?  Taking into account slack in the train, it seems like the whole system could be subject to compound resonance.  As far as I know, none of the current (recent?) manufacturers use this system, the last being American Models in their S-scale diesels.

Jay has been good to me - he is way ahead of me - and younger, so I may have to put him in my will!

Here is what might happen to those 81" drivers:  This one has 84" drivers, and is in 17/64.  I might add that both drivers on this one were very heavy counterweight.  A jewelers saw and the "News Report" fixed that.

Stephen,

Sorry to take so long getting back to you.  Every time I start something it gets overridden with something else.  Anyway,  I have somplete gearboxes w/all the gears but I hate to separate them.  Having said that, I started looking through the loose parts and found everything except the tube.  I measured it and determined the originals were ether made from 3/8" rod or heavy wall tubing.  I didn't have the correct tubing so I made a tube out of brass rod.  I didn't drill & tap the holes for the retainers (2-56) nor did I have extra screws (okay I guess I could have made some but I assume you can do the drilling, tapping, and finding the correct, very short, screws.  The other issue is the worm.  without having your worm gear in hand I can't attest to this one being correct.  It is the same double lead as the complete sets.  The ball bearings have been cleaned but are bone dry and will require lubrication (done when lubing the rest).  I would also highly recommend polishing the worm and shaft.  Any flaws, nicks, scratches, etc. will quickly destroy the phenolic gear.

Please take a look at the photos and let me know if this will work for you and if you want to complete the remainder of the upper housing work (see paragraph above).  If so, my email address is listed in my profile.

When I saw the above post, I immediately contacted Alan (and yeah, I mis-spelled his name).  I pointed out that nowhere in this thread is anything for sale.  Alan was gracious enough to get back to me in practically microseconds, and said nothing about my mis-spelling (I called him Allan).

Alan has neither the time, nor perhaps the interest in this arcane stuff, to actually read the entire thread.  Instead, his software, and presumably the forum police, alerted him, and hence his relatively gentle post above.  He was not aware of Jay's propensity for doing favors - so he asked me to make some comment here.

For those of you worried about Jay selling stuff in this forum - Jay does do stuff for compensation.  His Diesel mechanisms are state-of-the-art, probably on a par with MMW and Bultmann.  But he is known for helping hobbyists without expecting remuneration of any kind. He has sent me so much stuff that I find myself embarrassed that I have not fully reciprocated.  He did the nose of my Erie-built in lost wax brass at his cost.  He doesn't even ask for postage!

So please note that nothing is offered for sale in this thread.  He invested labor in restoring a Lobaugh gear part, without even knowing whether it was the part Stephen needed.

Lobaugh folks are few and far between.  We take care of each other.  This thread is in that spirit.

This is a good place for a photo.  This was a Si Simonton creation - Jay just sent it to me.  It reminds me of Si and Jay, and it is on display in my hallway.  I had expressed interest in buying it - but he just sent it.  And while Jay and I are friends, we are not so close that one would expect gifts of this nature.  He is just sharing the wealth!  Thanks, Jay!TNO 600 020

I'm truly not sure how, or even if, I should respond.

First things first, thank you for the shout out Bob.  I do appreciate it.  I've always enjoyed helping where I can.  As far as the gift Shasta car, I knew you really liked it and one of the things Si told me he wanted, from me, was to use his collection, run stuff, build things, etc.  He wanted things to be used and appreciated.  All of that made gifting the car to you a no brainer.

The parts for Stephen will be used for a good cause so, once again, I'm happy to share.

The rest of the story; over the years, I've been admonished for mentioning my little sideline business on this forum while not being a sponsor.  I get that so I don't, I also don't come here to solicit or promote things I do for a fee.  Again, I understand.  I do come here to offer help and sometimes parts or, even repairs.  If Alan, or The Powers That Be, deem my actions unacceptable please kick me out.  Most of the people I help know how to get in touch with me.  Otherwise I expect an apology.

By the way Alan, I did ask Stephen to email me, which he did, so we can ship his parts to him.

For my friends and fellow modelers, if you don't anymore posts here you can assume I've been removed.

Not holding my breath,

Jay

Well Jay...I am going to say this and then close the thread...note, I said close, not delete.  AND why in the world would you assume that you would be "removed" for this?  None of your actions as far as I am concerned in this thread would be deemed unacceptable.

First of all, I did read all of the posts but the first one was what got all of this started.  Why not just email that you found what another modeler/member was looking for rather than posting an entire conversation about it on the forum?  Just remember, the forum software uses some pretty sophisticated key word recognition along with alerts from folks that point us to take a look at a thread.  OK...so I made my comment above based on conversation in the thread BUT I DID NOT CLOSE IT which I think should give me some "points".  I could have just deleted it because it is not always clear when someone is doing something for free...or.....?  If you had to deal with the goings on with this forum on a daily basis, you might begin to understand that this is not an easy job and the perfect comment or solution does not always reveal itself.

Some folks wear their feelings a little too close to thin skin....all I did was ask that the deal, whatever it was, to be made via email and there was no implication of anything beyond that....
