I spent a while on the phone today with MTH.   Rich was very nice in spending some time working things out for special runs for the next year.

The only changes we made were....Manufacturers Railway, we are going to do it on the SW-1500, not the MP15DC.  That was the original plan, and i think the SW1500 is nicer.  A manufacturers SW1500 has never been done before, and the MP15 was done by atlas a while back.   Anyone who pre-ordered the Manufacturers MP-15DC, will have the option of changing the pre-order to the SW1500, or cancelling, and having their deposit refunded,

Also Im expecting that we will do another run of IHB SW-1500's.  The next run will be in the new IHB "retro" scheme, which is black and orange, with the old IHB circle logo on the cab .  There will be 3 more road numbers.

Summary of PDT special runs in the works with MTH...

MP-15DC..MoPac and PBNE (bethlehem steel)

MP-15AC...SOO (circus colors) and Delmarva Central

VO-1000....PRSL and US Navy

SW-1500's...Manufacturers Rwy, Alton & Southern, IHB, SP  (to either be done as a PDT special run, or they may choose to do that as an MTH offering)

SD-9's....MRL, and possibly SP bloody nose, CB&Q  gray/black

RS-1's ...Maryland & Delaware, Genesee & Wyoming (early scheme), and possibly AA (DT&I compass), and Rutland

F-7.....SP bloody nose

Steel Drop Bottom gondolas...Maine Central, C&EI

50' double door box car...SP paper loading (yellow door)

Northeastern Caboose...EL, Lackawanna and unlettered in red/black ends and brown.

40' Double sheathed box cars..Strasburg, Rutland, NWP

40' Single sheathed box cars....Central Vermont

36' wood reefers.....Pearl Brewing, Falstaff, OM, washington tomatoes, and hopefully 2 others.

Composite drop bottom gondolas...SP&S, NYO&W

And there are a few other things in the works that i feel i should let MTH make the announcement 1st.

AND...id like to thank Rich and Andy for their time and working with me on all this stuff.   Luckily, Its not all going to show up at the same time.

And then there's a few Atlas special runs in the hopper, and if i can get their attention, I'd like to do some stuff with Lionel, but all thats for another posting .

Thanks...

beth

Wow !!! This is really a substantial, ambitious offering !!! A lot of different models for everyone !!!! It’s great seeing items done that haven’t been done before or only a long time ago !!!  Now its time for people to step up and reserve some models to support these offerings. 🙂👍

Cheers !!! 😜

I would like to do Atlas and Lionel engine special runs...Problems are...

Price is on the high end.  IDK how many ppl want to spend $550 to $600 for an engine, when I can offer MTH engines between $350 and 479.

Atlas also has had a high MOQ on engines..IDK if they are sticking to that, or will come down to match what others are doing. .

Lionel's min order or engines is OK...their MOQ on freight and passenger cars is way too high...I'd really need to talk to them to see if they are interested in producing #'s that are reasonable in todays marketplace.    I was thinking of requesting a special run on the former MTH SW-1.  But TBH, they were never great sellers even at 350 an engine, ...so i dont  know if many ppl will wan to buy them at 499. each...  My cost on a Lionel SW-1 is more than what I sell an MTH SW1500 for.

I hoping that Atlas gets back to making some of the Trainman engines again.  They are decently detailed and a good bang for the buck.  Same for the trainman freight cars.

I boils down to how much are people willing to pay for a more detailed model.
An Atlas MP15 next to a RK SW1500 are similar but the MP15 is nicer - has better details and costs maybe 100$ or so more. I’d pay for it but if only the SW1500 were available, I’d be quite happy with that too. As you say - you have to know Which models are superior in any “brand”. There are some MTH premier you couldn’t pay me to have as the tooling has never been upgraded. Then there’s the RK RS1. It’s superb - better than some premier models.  Some Trainman models are really nice too.

A&P is a possibility.  Atlas has done it twice, but that was over 15 years ago.

Artwork from MTH comes along as they have time...But the USN VO-1000 is pretty simple....Yellow engine, black handrails, stripes on the end of the pilots.     Some USN engines had black stripes on the frame but the Earle Ammo Dept ones did not.

Thank you.

For those who dont run MTH engines...believe me, Im trying to get some special runs with Atlas or Lionel.   As mentioned before, Price and MOQ are obstacles.  Also depends what they have in the production pipeline.  Right now Lionel and Atlas are both doing  a lot of GP40's, SD40''s, Big GE and EMD's, and Amtrak engines.  None of this stuff i find appealing for a special run.   I like the Lionel RS-27's and SW1's.  The RS-27's Lionel is doing all the best paint schemes.  The only good scheme left is PRR, and it isnt like there arent enough PRR diesels out there.  The SW-1's.....its a nice engine, and of course a lot of short lines have had them...but IDK...it seems that the 3 railers just find it to be a little too small or something.

And the price..549 retail.  Id have to sell them for 499.

The RR's that I'd consider would be Allentown and Auburn, Reading (old dark green), Tulsa-Sapulpa Union RR,  Pere MArquette, Buffalo Creek, B&M, CNJ, Monon (If steve isnt doing it already).    I think PM wou;ld be my 1st choice.  LMK what y'all think....

No one has done an Amtrak Gp40 in Phase III paint!  they were prevalent in the 1990's!

Mr. Muffins Trains has a pre-order for Lionel Indiana Harbor Belt SW1200, at $495.

Maybe an MTH IHB waycar? I remember them from my childhood (where IHB and IC interchange once in a blue moon).

We've got an IHB caboose avbl for pre-order....

I would like as many SOO LINE red and white locos as possible.

I am not sure when all of the SOO LINE locomotives are going to arrive.

I can only pay for one at a time.

Andrew

My best guess is that the SOO MP-15AC's will arrive late this year or early next year.    U can pre-order now.

An MTH SW-1 in Boston & Maine would be fine with me. I bought a Railking SW-1 last year and I like it very much. It's a perfect size for a small layout. Am also going to preorder a Rutland RS1.

Yea, well....forget about any more MTH SW-1s.   Lionel bought the tooling and upped the retail price from 350. to 550.  They added smoke, and their electronics instead , but even so.   I love the SW-1, but ordered very few, cause IDK if all u guys are ready to pay 499. for an SW-1 that you all were  paying about 350. for.

And honestly, as much as i like the SW-1, its never been a great seller.  All the later SW's have always sold much better... FWIW..
