I have a s gauge American Flyer set with a Reading Lines (cab #300 AC), 4-4-2 steam locomotive circa late 1940's - early 1950's.

Is there a company that makes a speed control board for American Flyer engines of that era and how complicated is installation?

If by speed control, you mean cruise control, ie, the ability to maintain a constant speed around curves and up/down grades, here's what you need:

-a can motor from Timko repair depot, or one of the other vendors that make can motor conversions for Flyer S gauge steam locos

-a cruise Commander from Electric Railroad Company

If by speed control you mean just being able to run the loco with TMCC, then all you need is

-an AC Commander from Electric Railroad.

Installation is fairly straightforward, but if this loco has a metal tender, you will have to figure out a suitable antenna. Carl Tuveson could answer your questions better than I.

The question you ask sounds as though you want remote control in TMCC/Legacy, and if that is correct RoyBoys' answer is right on. The installation of the motor driver boards is not difficult, ERR Electric Rail Road has very good instructions and also good backup from their Tech people. You can contact them by email or telephone, they will do all they can to help with the install. I have used many of their boards and you can get driver boards for anything Gilbert or Lionel built except maybe the Gilbert Flyer hand car, I am looking into converting one of the Flyonel handcars but I am not sure that I will find enough space in that. Your 300AC will be a piece of cake to do, whether you want to use the AC Commander or do the can motor conversion and use the Mini 2, or the Cruise light, or the Cruise Commander. If you look at the ERR website and spend some time studying the boards or call and talk with Ken you will find it not to difficult, just be careful to follow the directions and take your time. Good luck.
