K-Line was the only train manufacturer to address this issue and included a track with a protection device in every starter set. Just took one apart. Consists of a 33 volt TVS also with a 39 PF ceramic capacitor wired to both ends of the TVS. Also a An LED with a resistor to indicate power is on. Perhaps one of my EE friends here can tell me what purpose the capacitor serves and is it worth adding? Will it afford any additional protection?

Dale, the only reason to have a small value capacitor across the TVS that I can think of is to provide a high frequency AC short in concert with the TVS. It would provide minimal to no protection at 60Hz.
Dale, I have been told that is to minimize higher frequency interference with other household items. Even some HO slotcars set in the late 90s/early 00s had them across the motor brushes. G
