I am going to run my MTH trolley across the back side of the layout. I will put a backdrop on that side with building flats. I made these out of masonite. I have not decided on a color, but rustoleum has a pretty good range of choices.

My LHS which does not carry Atlas O for some reason had a few pieces just lying around on a shelf. I was getting some Fastrack for my layout and asked how much for the 40" Atlas O straight piece and he gave it to me for $10.00 so it looks like the elevated trolley is going to be Atlas O. I'll need a few more pieces.

The Atlas is very nice, but it does make me appreciate my Fastrack in the sense that Lionel did a pretty good job for what Fastrack is.
Atlas works too. Any un-ballasted track with lots of ties would give you a nice open look to the lower level.

You might also want to cap-off the tops of the bents with a small rectangular piece of Masonite. It will give the bents a nice finished look and you can mount stuff on the tops that way; like barrels or flags or signals or signage.

As to color well you need to decide if the bents are made of concrete or steel; It looks like steel to me so I'd consider a color like Claret Wine; a reddish color or an off-orange color like rusted or surface treated COR-TEN.
