Not being a fan of the 381E (I know, sacrilege!) I prefer a traditional 408E to pull my four car state set. Plenty of twin motor power and my dark green one looks good with my green state cars, though not a perfect match. Which engine do you prefer for your state set power?

I only have baby states. How bout a pic or two of your set and engine.
I use the 381E or the 400E. I had hoped to get a 408 however the prices for a 408 are outrageous currently. Like most things, with some patience, I will find one for the right price.
A bit off topic perhaps, but I have long wondered why a 9E commands such strong prices. I’m thinking there were not many made, but I really don’t know. Any insight from the experts will help quell my query.
That is why I have the 402. Another reason for me not being any hurry to get a 408.
Regarding the 9E, I have never figured out why they are so pricey. I know and understand people can price their stuff for any price they want, however, if you shop around, you can get one for a very reasonable price. I picked up the MTH version last February for $450 from TrainZ.
408E all the way. I've never been a huge fan of the 381E, although I do own a Lionel Classics reissue. There's something about the roar of the 2 motors in a 408E, along with its weight, that commands respect.
I use the issued 381 with an original 4 cars 1929 set. With the wide radius curves on the layout, I dont really need twin motor power. The key is proper lubrication of the cars. Now if I was to get a couple add on cars... the 408 would be my selection. Steam power must be the 400e.
I have also pulled my state set with my Lionel Classics dark gray 2-400E.
I currently have a 381 main frame w/ the extra weights listed on eBay . About 14#, if anyone wants to upgrade the pulling power of their normal 381. Harry
