At York I bought a new (old stock) set of TMCC Century Club PRR Sharknose diesels, both powered.  These are beautifully done engines, but when I got them home, I was really disappointed in the sound quality.  First one, then the other engine developed a raspy speaker buzz with the engine sounds.  I was about to take them apart and see if I could replace the speaker with a Fat Boy, when I discovered that squeezing the shell on either side of the fuel tank stopped the buzz.  When I released my grip I could feel the buzz, again right on either side of the tank.  Hmm.  Maybe I could dampen the buzz.  I cut 3/16x4" strips from a Manila folder, pulled the shell slightly away from the frame and slipped the strip between shell and frame, on either side of the fuel tank.  Repeated on other side. It worked perfectly.  No more buzz!

"Necessity is the Mother of invention" Thanks for posting.

I purchased quite a few Lionel F3's and F7's and have notice a buzz too. Mine was coming from the roof - the metal detail fans rattling in their shrouds.

So I popped the lid off and removed the fans out from the shrouds... Cannot see them anyway...

Thanks, that's interesting to know as someone who's had to grapple with buzzing speakers - mostly on non-Lionel TMCC engines - and also tried various speaker upgrades/replacements to improve sound quality.

It might have been interesting if you'd taken the body shell off to see how the speakers were mounted. In your case it would seem that there was actually a problem with the frame or maybe the rim of the speaker itself vibrating against the shell. I have traced most of my problems to the seal or gasket between the speaker and the frame; if it's not tight, or is broken or out of alignment, at any volume above the low settings the speaker will vibrate against the metal producing an annoying rattle. Alternatively if the speaker has an enclosure that can rattle too if not properly screwed down.

Anyway, glad your noise disappeared after a relatively simple fix.
