There's some awesome stuff in here, doubting I will win anything but going to be a fun auction.  Been wanting to go 2 Rail for a while and my recent move finally convinced me.  I have bid on stout many times, but never won.  However that was in 3 Rail so we'll see how this one goes.  Other's experience with Stout speaks very well of them so I feel completely comfortable with bidding.  Honestly I see myself going this route before I ever go back to the big auction site again as I despise their tactics which only benefits them, large sellers, and disreputable buyers.

Well I stopped in at a Museum just a week ago, to see a small part of there 11,000 piece collection of O scale 2 rail and Gauge 1 all brass, all factory painted collection. It originally was all collected by one man. This could be hoarding, maybe, or collecting? If he that collects the most, or hoards the most is the winner, this guy could certainly be the winner. The pieces are all pristine, and he had two full time employees to maintain it, and a three story building to house it, and beautiful glass cabinets to display it, and a layout to run it on. Any guesses what his name was?          cTr.... ( Choose the Right )

What an incredible waste of time, most everything went for 2 or 3 times what it appeared to be worth.  A $4K Max gray engine with old paint was a high light.  Ebay is WAY cheaper.

Maybe but that's hardly the seller or Stout's fault. People were obviously willing to pay those prices. I sure wasn't willing to but I don't fault anyone else for that.

I beg to differ. The ones that I was watching went for cheap to reasonable prices...

Totally unsurprising.

A $4K Max gray engine with old paint was a high light.  Ebay is WAY cheaper.

Very unusual to see almost any of this stuff on eBay, but I'd bet we'll see it all again in the future. Just wait for the next estate to hit the auction block.

Well, I guess the good thing about it is that the vultures are not going to be able to make the kind of money they used to reselling stuff they got for cheap because now the end buyers are there to bid on stuff before the vultures can buy it cheap.  I noticed there were over 500 on line bidders shown as being logged on.

I've seen this before -  room full of modelers competing with 3-4 dealers and 95% of the estate goes home with the dealers.  Either they can sit on stuff for years or they have other outlets and buyers that are perfectly willing to be separated from their funds.

Either way, while there was a lot of stuff I might have wanted, the one item I'm actually actively looking for was absent.  Probably the best result possible for me.

Well if they have buyers that will pay more than that stuff went for, they have something all right.

That was crazy.  There was a lot of stuff that sold for 2 or 3 times (or more) than what I paid, just in the last couple of years too.  Golden Gate Depot aluminum passenger cars sets for nearly $5,000 (with the buyer's premium)!  Really?  If that is what they are really worth, then I should start selling!

The results were very encouraging. An Atlas B&O GP9 sold for $525 but really more like $624.75 with the 19% buyer's premium. Another $75 more and the buyer could've had a 3rd Rail B&O GP9.

Two-rail models, namely locomotives, are becoming more scarce with MTH and Atlas out of the picture. I have 23 Atlas 2-rail locomotives and if prices continue to increase I may have to think long and hard about selling a few. The same goes for some MTH 2-rail locomotives.

If you were looking for Current Line or Wagner trolley power trucks, over two hundred went in the sale! I wonder whose trolley stuff this was, and who was buying it; they do not seem to attend trolley meets.

here is what is totally exciting . This auction shows that our hobby is alive,  vibrant, and not dyeing like some people say.  O scale is alive in all of its aspects . I am so happy to be a part of the movement !!! I bid on a number of items only to have been blown out of the water !! I guess my collection just went up a notch. what we all have to remember is that this is the greatest hobby on earth!!! lets enjoy it and pass it on !!

There were several good deals on certain rare stuff.  Several very nice brass steeple cabs went for cheap, and for builders there was a lot of 3 Q-car kits for $450.

NYC Mercury engine plus 3 cars went for $675.  That engine never comes up in 2-rail.

There was a nice brass Overland SD40-2 for $650, and several E units which went for reasonable amounts.

I was shocked by how high a few things went, but it was hit or miss.  I had my heart set on one particular item, the Columbus, Delaware & Marion Interurbans, but the set went for too much.  Plus I really only want one, so I'll continue to search.

I was able to pick up a bundle of carbodies to complete some projects.  Some of the Ken Kidder stuff was very reasonable.

Dare I say it was actually a bit fatiguing after awhile seeing so much stuff.  I cannot believe how much Chicago prototype resided with one individual.  They might have owned more than the actual Chicago North Shore!

Funny thing about auction you can choose to bid or not. I can tell that Stout is one of the best auction houses I have ever done business with and their descriptions and gradings are spot on so the stuff they sell gets premium money because of their reputation. I attended an auction in their Indiana location and they are first rate serve lunch for onsite customers. I purchased the dreaded Amtrak Acela with all the fancy stuff got it and the addon for $900 so there are deals to be had.

Yes, you can bid.  And you can not bid.  At the inflated prices on many items, I choose not to bid.  Oh, and you know:  "there, their, they're," as in their descriptions, their stuff, their reputation, and their Indiana location.  And they're a first rate...

Not that I agree with his response but your original post came across very condescending. I had no issue understanding his original one even he didn't use the terms their, they're, and there correctly.

No condescension was intended.  And that was not the original post by me.  It was my response to his response to my original post, where I just made an observation about the auction prices that he apparently did not agree with, and he basically retorted by stating that nobody is forcing you to bid.

No condescension was intended. But the only thing you came away with from my post was not the fact of why they get such high bids. Clearly pointing out my incorrect grammar. Pretty condescending.

Wow, that was an insane price for that set.  I think that I paid $2, 200, including shipping, for a new set.  The GGD 1951-53 Santa Fe set is very nice, though I do not think that is worth $4K+.  With patience, you should be able to find another set quite a bit cheaper.

Even more baffling was the GGD 1938 Broadway Limited set for nearly $4K.  That set does not even represent a complete train as produced, in that it lacks head end cars and the baggage dorm car.  They did produce a bunch of sleepers, but it has questionable use of the single streamlined diner, since a converted heavyweight diner was used for the first couple of years after 1938 and then a streamlined twin unit diner was used a couple of years later.  I am not sure whether a single streamlined diner was ever used.

OK Ill Bite, What was your logic on this? Don't you know how difficult it is to finds parts for GGD 3 rail... let alone GGD 2 rail? IMHO your best bet for GGD stuff is stick with the pre orders or patiently wait for either the 3 rail or 2 rail set that YOU WANT/DESIRE to show up at an auction...

unless you have an edge...like the Kingsford Edge...

Actually, going from 2-rail to 3-rail scale is pretty easy on the GGD cars.  Just need wheelsets and the pickup rollers are pretty generic.  The underbodies are made for either 2 or 3 rail.
