Well, someone had to get it right.

Anyone who ever bought a ticket on the LIRR Concourse at the old Penn Station saw LONG ISLAND RAIL ROAD emblazoned over the ticket windows. Ditto the road name (roadname ?) on the tickets of the time. Since I've not ridden the LIRR is some years now, I not sure what contemporary tickets say.

Funny, as jknapp notes above, most railroads use one word. However, they abbreviate it as if it were two. There's a PRR and an MCRR, but no PR or MCR. and roads that use the term Railway generally abbreviate it Ry, so why not Rr? Of course, the proper term is System , but that's a discussion for another time.
