My Lo-V (30-2448-1) Subway engine will not start-up, after turning off all track power and turning it back on.

I took all engines off the tracks and left  only the Subway.

I then did a factory reset, shut off track power, turned ON power, and "added new MTH engine.

Engine was found and listed as Number 1 which it always was.

All functions work and engine runs.  Sounds are very good, so I believe battery is OK.

If I leave track power on, I can "shutdown" engine and "start-up" engine  and all functions OK.

But....If I shut track power OFF, then turn it ON....the engine will not respond to "startup"

If I go back and do another factory reset...add engine again..etc. The same will happen!

Please help if you can, it would be truly appreciated.

Frank,

When you add the engine each time, do you briefly get a message "Changing engine to #1", or something similar? If that's the case, the engine is not remembering its DCS ID# from the last time it was added.

That would indicate, as Geegg points out above, that either the battery is low (most likely), the battery is disconnected from the PS2 board (less likely) or the PS2 board's charging circuit has a problem (least likely).

Greg....Engine sounds continue for 3 seconds after TRACK power is shut off.

Barry....When I add engine each time it says..looking for engine, then found engine, then added as engine #1

Do you both feel I should buy a new battery? Do you suggest a separate battery charger for recharging engines or is track power enough to do it?

How long should track power be on to charge fully and should the engine be started or simply on the powered track?

Thanks so much for your help...it is fairly frustrating to have all this expensive equipment and not know how to fix it.  I have the DCS manual, but I am not a retired electrical engineer, simply a semi-handy mechanical person.

More Junk -

R-36 World’s Fair Subway just crapped out after changing the battery. Lights on no one home. Got 16 years out of it.

It’s in a local MTH repair shop. Understand PS2 bds. are being replace with new style PS3 now?

Waiting on the dreaded $$$ call soon. Original sounds were the best subway chatter, hope they can down load them into a new PCB otherwise the set will become a decoration.

Heard the 2nd get WF set isn't the same sounds containing the usual incorrect station verbiage. Queens Plaza?  https://youtu.be/Abjnr1NPVjs

Barry, Gregg, Sirt, All,

I bought a new 2.4volt battery...bought an AC charger...left battery on charger for 12 hours..

Installed new battery in Subway. Same thing happened!

Steps taken were:

Installed new battery.... put engine on track..turned track power on.  Will NOT start up!

Shut track power...Did factory reset "engine willl be removed from list after resetting"

"engine has been reset"

Deleted engine #1

Added MTH engine...engine found...."changing address to address #1

Starts up.....all functions work!

Shut track power......interior lights on....press startup..NOTHING..no horn, no forward motion, no functions.

Very frustrating.  I shouldn't have to delete  and Add engine every time.  It makes me wonder if I want to continue with this and whether I want to invest more money in MTH only to have issues when I want to run my trains for myself and family.  Its hard to get grandchildren interested in the hobby when I have to tell them "the trains are not running" over and over again.  They lose interest!

I wonder what the cost would be to get a diagnosis from MTH?

Got the call today to fix for 250.00. PS2 bds no longer available (probably due to a bad design oversite) Needed new upgrade PCB's with improved spkr. "Z" not the same. Old spkr. was crappy anyway. Original WF sound set was the best of all subs and can still be installed into the new PCB.

I have wonder how many PS2's are out there that have been repaired or are DOA. Many of us bought subways over 16 yrs ago. I have 2 local sounds sets, that aren't effected and 3 more PS2 sets. MTH should have recalled and updated all the faulty designed PS2 product along with the PS1 QSI issue as well.

Frank,  This the PS-2 3V system.  As Barry said, make sure you have a good connection between battery and the harness to the board.  Was the battery connector corroded? If not and harness is good, there is a fault that can occur on the Power supply board that can cause this.  Board can be tested to see.

You said this is a new battery, if you plug a 6V bulb into it, does it stay lite.  By the way, the 2.4V batteries only need to be charged 4 to 6 hrs.

If battery and harness good, and the engine only plays a short shutdown, chances are the Power Supply board needs repairs or replacement.  I can do this repair.  G

Members All, I finally have a resolution to this issue of Subway not starting after Power is shut off.

I have a member in my train club who is MTH certified. I let him check it out.  He ran numerous tests and finally deleted all engine info and then re-added it.

He tested it for 3 days and it worked fine.  Its on my layout and working fine for me also.
