Sunset-3rd Rail announced the GE P42 Genesis in multiple paint schemes.  He announced Amtrak Phases I, II,III,IV,V,VI, plus NH, VIA BLUE, NJT and Metro North.  I  see the past heritage paint schemes but notthe 50th Anniversary schemes.

I would order the Dark Blue 50th and the 50th Anniversary Pepsi schemes first.

Get those reservations in!!!

We haven't done any research on the project yet outside of listening to requests that have come in on projects.  Right now the answer is honestly we do not know.

Gotcha.

Well, there's [at least] 3 noses to consider.

The original nose with the glass over the headlight

The bolt on fiberglass nose with the notch for the headlight - this came about somewhere in Phase V (and would include both 40th and 50th Anniversary paint jobs).

The nose with the trap door - NJT

Also, the MNR ones are P32AC-DMs.... they have extra vent panels and 3rd rail pickup shoes.

Cool.  I was going to send you an email on the variations and still will.  I have no idea, but I am guessing the bulk of interest will be in the Phase V or later paint schemes.

Once Scott gets a sense of where reservations fall, that will likely determine the extent of variations being done.  I was aware that some of these were P32AC-DMs and were slightly different.  Also, NJT's were actually PL42ACs produced by Alstom and they are a different tool having the fluted side panels. They did have four P40DCs that were ex Amtrak though which is what will likely be produced unless there is a flood of NJT orders which is probably not likely.

While I was no longer living on the Jersey Shore when the Genesis locomotives were going into service, one might be interesting to head up my NJT Comet cars to with my F40PH and ALP-44.

Ive got some books and stuff here. Also have an N scale set of basic drawings for an SDP40F. If you're working with Amtrak I'm sure they have may have better ones.

The bolt on nose modification was done sometime in the mid 2000s as they went into the shop, so they all would have come out in Phase V. It was done to facilitate some kind of electrical upgrade.

I guess williams did some primitive superliners in full scale back in the day, but since the "good" K line ones were only ever done in phase IV, I suspect you will see some Phase III orders for superliners, and P42s to go with it. I wont pretend to know how to slide tool the nose, but look at it as analogous to an F unit with 1 headlight or 2... might need to investigate doing it both ways. The antenna arrays have grown over time too.  Choose your road #s from photos, as some of them have gained ground planes and things on the roof that not all of them have.

If you ignore the promotional paint jobs (the Post Office, Big Game Train, Heartland Flyer, the Toyota Truck, Good Morning America), you've still got:

Phase III (P42s were all solid stripe)

Phase IV

Phase IV Northeast Direct (dark grey roof, logo on bottom of nose sides)

Phase V Early with the blue and red frame stripe

Phase V with just a red frame stripe

40th Anniversary (Phase I, II, III, IV)

50th Anniversary (Phase I, Pepsi Can, Midnight Blue, Phase V w/ 50th logo, Phase "ALC-42")

I have examples of Superliner Is in HO and N by Concor of which I can't vouch on their accuracy as well as the K-Line and Williams Superliners in O.  The Williams are not terrible if you replace the trucks, pull out the silhouette window inserts and put in an actual interior.   I started to replace the trucks on one and that's about as far as I got, but of course I only have access to Superliner II trucks and the Williams, while not really a Superliner I or II are painted for Phase II and Phase III so they should have Superliner I trucks.

Correct me if I am wrong, but as I recall, Superliner IIs were delivered in Phase IV paint and were the first cars to wear this scheme in 1991 when they started to arrive.

As for the P42s, we can probably figure out the nose.  If it is just a headlight variation that isn't very difficult.  The venting for the P32AC-DMs is pretty easy with a slide tool.

Bit more than the headight.  Its literally the nose of it.

(see also the added ground plane on the cab roof, this one is missing a panel above the coupler, between the HEP sockets):

The shape of the headlight changed, as the glass panel covering the headlights was omitted. The new opening is rounded rather than pentagonal as well.

The AC-DM vents... I'll leave that one to you guys.  Theres differences on the sides and the roof, as well as the additional hardware for the 3rd rail shoes.

If you do the work for a P32, you might as well make the Empire service paint job for the Amtrak 700 series. Note also, the escape door nose instead of a numberboard.

I am still bubbling with delight on the arrival of my Amfleet cars and all of a sudden, the Genesis and Superliners!  Pinch me, I must be dreaming.  Needless to say, Scott has my reservations for both the loco and cars.  The only question I have is since 3rd Rail does not apparently do dummy diesels, I ordered two of the powered P42's with a note that I need different numbers on each.  I am sure others will want the same.

He is very good at sending different number he gets it. I would like to have some of these but I am afraid he is going to announce some more SF passenger cars after I order.

Peter,

There will be at least 4 numbers for the standard paint schemes or as many different numbers as any one customer orders.  Even on the Amfleet cars, Scott made sure that every one who ordered extra cars got different road numbers.

I will say that the power usage on my 3 rail locomotives is pretty low.  Just to experiment, I have run 5 powered 3rd Rail diesels (My two Amtrak FL9s and three Amtrak E8s) with 15 scale length cars that mostly had LED lighting and I only drew 8 amps off the transformer.

While the Amfleet project took some time gaining traction and we have talked about it at length, Scott really saw the change in modeling interests after the Viewliners gave the needed momentum for both Amfleets and Viewliners.  This project will move forward a lot faster than the Amfleets!

How are you going to swap out the Williams trucks with Superliner trucks? Do they even make Superliner I or II trucks in O scale?

For some reason I just saw this.  I have two pairs of Atlas Horizon trucks.  Like many projects on my "workbench" this project is partially complete.   The Horizon trucks are the same as Superliner II trucks.  I need to get it back out and do some thinking one how to engineer it properly, but with some time and thought it won't be a hard project.
