Many of Sunset's diesels have had multiple runs, all except the FP7.  Scott has indicated their is little interest in a rerun of this model.

Yes they are close to F3s and F7s but 4 feet longer.  Is there enough interest to at least see if a reservation spot could be posted?

There are at a minimum 25 paint schemes that could be done if enough to do the artwork.

A&WP, ACL, ARR, C&O, C&EI, CGW, CRI&P, CRR, FEC, GA, L&N, MKT, MILW, NP, PRR, RJC, RDG, RF&P, SLSF, SLSW, SOO, SOU, SP, Wof A, WP  maybe multiple schemes and secondary owners as well.

Would really love to see these be rerun.  I'm in for two SOU black and possibly a CRR.

so you’re saying there’s a chance?

I don't make those decisions on behalf of 3rd Rail.  I merely support Scott in the decisions he makes as the business owner.  I have suggested that a rerun of this might be popular as it has been a while.  If anyone is interested in a 2nd run I'd suggest you contact Scott and request it.  The research is done on most of the roads, but I don't believe Scott has the tooling anymore for this model.  To justify a new tool, it is probably a mininum 350+ unit run.

Perhaps adding a few of the roads that weren't done last time plus some of the repaints puts it over the top?

I can say though that these models will be going forward first:

  • E1/EA
  • 2nd Run E5/E6
  • Milwaukee Road EP-3
  • SD40-2
  • FA
  • P32DC/P42

That is several years worth of projects but don't give up hope.  That project was a bit of a sleeper on the first go around.

Is that the order of production?  I understood that the E1/EA is next, but I thought that the SD40-2 was higher up on the list and that the 2nd Run E5/E6 would be later?

I would certainly want 2 in SR black. And as far as the Clinchfield FP7 200, it was delivered in grey and yellow, painted CRR black, then Family Lines, then Seaboard System 118, as well as three different CSX schemes and currently runs in West Virginia as Western Maryland 67!  ACL's were delivered in purple and silver, went to black, then some went to SCL black. C&O's went to the B&O, and.... well you get the idea! I think enough interest would be there, personally.

That's an interesting statement. Who owns the tooling for all these plastic bodied diesels Scott has been turning out? I would assume the factory does, but does that mean that another importer could use the tooling?

Ken

Scott changed factories around 2016.  I'm not privy to the specifics.  Some of the tooling went to the new factory and some did not.  The factory retains the majority interest in the tooling typically.  I don't believe the prior factory is still in operation, but that is speculation purely on my part.

However, with the new slide tool technology doing an FP7 and FP9 using the same tool isn't as challenging as it was back in 2013 when the FP7s were in design.

FP9s for the Canadian Roads as well as NdeM would be interesting.  I'd certainly be interested in some NdeM units and maybe some VIA Rail ones.

I'd also enjoy seeing the former SP FP7s in Amtrak Phase I.

You also forgot EMDD demo scheme from the Ontario Canada plant.

I most definitely be in for the PRR 5 stripe tuscan AA's, the EMD Demonstrator, and maybe the DLGE single stripe freight units. But alas, Scott Mann is not into it so my next best option is a convert....

20220125_122237the next question is which one is the least costly option...if there is an option?

Well that explains why this model was never offered as a rerun. I bet this is the same issue with the SD7/9 and the FL9's.

Will the 2 Brass Steam offerings fit in here (plastic diesel facility ?) or are they in a different production facility ?  If to fit here, the Q is possibly even longer 😖
I hope not in this Q. 🤔
Patience is definitely needed 😬

I believe a more modern GEVO diesel would be a better choice for Scott than the proposed  GE-9 which Sunset did in brass maybe 20 years ago, very plain model other than plans I doubt there is any useable tooling for the original model, 4-5 years ago I would have bought at least a pair of SD 40-2s today it has to be current diesel.   JMO

I really wish Scott would do an alco RS3 with fixed pilots — practically every railroad had them-only weaver did one properly— one could also offer an rsd4 and rsd5 since they are the six wheel truck version of the RS3 basically

This I would get on board with tomorrow! RS3’s, Hammerheads & the RSD series diesels! Long Island Worlds fair & PRR for me please.

side bar: for re-runs I would love to see FL9’s before I see FP7’s

I would love to see another run of the FP7’s. I have a couple of Rock Islands, and they are fabulous models. It's my dream for 3rd rail to do another go-around including SEPTA, Reading, and Pennsylvania 9880 (Stourbridge Line). I would order the heck out of that run.

Back in 2021, I emailed @sdmann and he indicated it might be time to do another run. So sounds possible!
