I just got word that Scott is looking to rerun the GP7/9s. I understand that a member of the NWHS is submitting a color sample that is believed to be a match to the original paint to the RED BIRDS. Also, if he got 15 orders for the BLUE BIRD'S he would consider those also. Note the photo on the website in the museum which is a freight GP painted in the incorrect red. It now has been repainted in the correct freight black.

Did he mention if they’d be doing any additional paint schemes besides N&W? I’ve got one of their GP9’s in B&O paint and would love a WM GP7.

They're rerunning all the previous. 3rd Rail has always said if they get enough inquiries they'll do another scheme.

I'd be in for 2-3 WM myself. Maybe @sdmann would be interested to see some Western Maryland buyers in this thread.

Along with my very biased $0.02, I would ask there be some more GP-7/GP-9 CB&Q offerings in Chinese Red.

Example:

CBQ 251, EB Way Freight, Working Pepperidge Farm Bakery (rrpicturearchives.net)

The current Sunset CB&Q offering is the GP-7 in the "Blackbird" scheme.  I still intend to purchase it along with the CB&Q SD-9, and as a way to remember the time I lived in the Pacific Northwest, the Spokane Portland & Seattle GP-9.

The ONLY way to get these additional schemes is to RESERVE.    Us telling each other we want them on this forum does not give Scott an indication we want to buy .    It looks like at least 10 WM units are desired.    It looks like a few more would be enough to get the scheme done.

I did ask about some detail changes, and Scott said that does not work to make a small rerun cost effective for him.    I assume paint scheme changes would work.

I am in for 2 of the CNJ's (any roadnumber but only with yellow stripes). Where do I reserve them!

Walter

Walter,

There will be four road numbers for CNJ.  I got all four in the first run.  Here are some photos of one of my two rail ones.  A few details had to be compromised due to it being a mass-produced run such as the CNJ specific marker lamps and lack of a plate for the road number on the cab sill.  Overall, this is a pretty faithful model of the prototype though.

One of the QC items to be corrected will be road numbers as well as painting errors on the first run.

Yes, this PRR one has the wrong number as PRR only had 3 in this configuration and Sunset did 4 numbers.  However, I'm happy with the model overall as it ran on the NY&LB and on the PRSL in passenger service.  These photos were shot with my DSLR and show the detail a little better than the cell phone images of one of my CNJ ones.

Tagged Scott in this thread so he would see the interest in the scheme exists. Can't place a reservation on a scheme that isn't listed on the 3rd Rail site, and in the past when I've individually emailed about schemes it doesn't seem to get too far because you're only one voice. Here, we see there's maybe 10 units under discussion already.

@GG1 4877 I assume the handrail issue is being corrected as well?

GG1 4877 - Jonathan...appreciate your photos of the CNJ first run.

Question...why the F on the short hood end? CNJs were set up as F on long hood end...at least when delivered and in the yellow stripe/JCL Statue of Liberty logo. I have photos of JCL 1522-1524-1525-1526 green/yellow stripes, 1527 blue/yellow CRR-NJ, 1529 solid green CRR-NJ and 1532 JCL green/yellow stripes all showing the F on the long hood end.

Looking at my CNJ diesels photos/slides, it seems that the F moved to the short hood end definitely during Coast Guard  red scheme era and also somewhat during the blue/yellow era and the green CENTRAL RR of NJ logo era.

When CNJ 1532(2nd) returned after rebuild resulting from Newark Bay swim, it still had F on long hood end.

I just placed confirmed reservation order for 2 CNJs of the 2nd run.

Thanks Walter!  I am going to add this to the list of corrections for Run 2.

I will have to redo mine, but the paint is matched off of True Color Sea Foam Green so it shouldn't be too difficult.  I'm looking to also add the number on the plate over the vents and under the cab.  Not sure that is possible on the production run, but again an easy fix with some decals and matching paint.

Jonathan/GG1 4877...also correct the font use for the F. 1st run looked more like a metal F size wise. Use a matching font from the JERSEY CENTRAL LINES logo.

What about exhaust shield front/long hood of cab and also exhaust louver covers on roof?

Thanks.

Walter

PS: If these corrections can be made, might just order the other 2 CNJ rerun roadnumbers.

I caught the font issue on the F after I got mine.  For the exhaust shield and louvers, those were later additions weren't they?

Jonathan...exhaust covers and shield were CNJ add-on. Engine crews were complaining about exhaust fumes into cab so E-port came up with this fix. Was added to all the GP7s.

What CNJ roadnumbers in the first run...2nd run?

Will 2nd run also be green w/yellow stripes?

Thanks.

Walter

Typically second runs don't get detail changes.  As mentioned in this thread, some of the locomotives got manufactured with a the first handrail behind the cab missing and that will be corrected.  While I don't speak for the factory or for Sunset on this issue, I just know that with the lower production numbers on a second run detail changes can lead to other errors.

However, painting is pretty straight forward.  The 2nd run will be the as-delivered Sea Foam Green with the yellow stripes and not the later Austerity Green / no stripes.  I have to pull mine out of the box to get all four numbers, but I know one is 1529.  I'll post the other three sometime this weekend.

the website will put up an announcement that "reservations are closed".     Usually about the time they schedule the build since that is based on the numbers.    So you could look at the projected delivery date and back off 3-4 months to make a guess.

When reservations are closed,  you can still put in a "standbye reservation".    If someone cancels,  you might luck out.   I have been very successful once with standbye, and not so much the second time.    So it is a risky way to reserve.

I ended up with the standbye process because of my personal budget situations changing.

Jonathan...any update on the 4 new roadnumbers for 2nd run of CNJ GP7s?

Thanks.

Walter

Walter - the numbers will be the same as the first run and I unfortunately need to dig mine out of the closet they are currently in.  Being 2 rail which I don't have a layout for currently they are at the bottom.  Luckily it is a long weekend and I don't have an immediate family member with a birthday for the first time in the last two weekends to get to them.

Interestingly enough, my PRR unit doesn't have a missing handrail which tells me that not all of these units are incorrect.  I didn't post a photo of the opposite side where some are missing the handrail.

Will the road names that ran long hood forward be set up that way? I recall From the 1st run all units were configured short hood forward.
