Folks,
I’ve got an early version w/green boiler. I’m considering reversing the brake shoes so that they face the rear on the front engine to more properly reflect the prototype pictures I’ve seen. Also, the smoke deflector may be wrong for an early version as I thought it may have come later but am not sure. Thoughts, suggestions?

Brake shoe swap complete, looks more like the prototype. Boiler has to come off, 4 screws plus front engine pivot pin underneath to enable release of two steam lines underneath smoke box. My QSI equipped model has numerous wire harnesses which fortunately I didn’t have to disconnect as there is just enough slack to lay the boiler next to the mechanism. The only thing missing now is the rearward facing brakes for the first driver. I don’t have any extra brake shoes right now and their position behind the cylinders makes it difficult to see them so it may not be worth the effort for some. When I do get some more brake shoes, I may not have to remove the boiler again as the front engine may swing out far enough to enable drilling and tapping a 2mm hole for each side.

Until you take it apart, it’s hard to know how well it’s put together. I found this model to be well engineered, relatively easy to disassemble and service. The transmission consisting of belt w/cog pulleys and bb journals transmit torque to gear boxes all cleverly hidden within the frame is bullet-proof. I believe this design was pioneered by Mort Mann. When I finished my work, I turned the sound off so I could listen for any unusual drivetrain noises requiring further attention. Aside from the sound of wheels on rail, it was spooky quiet.
Agree. I enjoyed working on my Q O-5A, very well built. I can't wait for my L-105, which should be very similar to yourL-131
