Gentlemen,

I'm curious as to why the Cab light on the lead unit of a consist (E7 AA set) refuses to go off after total shutdown, F9 twice X 3.  Is the unit trying to tell me there’s a problem?  I figured out how to consist them and for awhile all was well, then for reasons unknown the cab light in one unit started staying on after total shutdown.  After I pull the NCE power plug the light goes off but comes back on as soon as I plug it back in.  I’ve tried reprogramming, re-consisting to no avail.  I’ve read/skimmed through the entire 468 pages of the exciting and plot-thrilling QSI manual which was analogous to taking a drink from a fire hose.  I’m using a NCE Power Cab only.  Suggestions?

Tia

I am not sure how that light/port works.   It might default to on even when down.    Shutdown might only apply to sound functions, not lights.    Lights might be on a different function.

I just spent some time programming my GGD   Alco PA/PB set.     I use a SPROG and JMRI/Decoderpro to do it.

First I wanted the headlights to go out in reverse, not just dim.   It was easy.     It was an option on the page that lets you set light control.

I ran into an issue I could not solve with the cab lights however.    The default is for them to be on when stopped and go off after 10-15 seconds when moving in either direction.     I wanted them to go off immediately when starting to move.    I could not get the controls for that "port" to do that.    However, a simple work around was to change ports.     there is a page listing "Light Ports" and it has a bunch.   Each light is on a different port, and it has ports for both front and rear markers and front and rear number boards.    I thought the PA does not have rear markers, so I changed the port for the cab light to the port for the rear markers.   then I could set it to go be on when stopped, and go off when moving.     These settings have 4 options:   Forward, Neutral From Forward (NFF), Neutral From Reverse, (NFR), and Reverse.    I set reverse and forward to be off and NFR and NFF to be on.

I am wondering if you might change the port on the errant cab light to control it differently if you want.

I am sure there is a way to do this directly with Indexed CVs in stead of using Decoderpro.

Thanks for your response.  The fact that both units would shut-down and go completely dark suggests there’s something wrong with one unit that now shuts down and goes almost completely dark except for its cab light.  I remember another detail, when I was programming one unit and finished I placed the other unit on the same track (I only have a test track) without turning my Power Cab off. I’m not sure if that’s a no-no in DCC world but perhaps I created an unstable electrical situation that the cab light is warning me about?  Just a wild guess...

If the "Reset" was done... and the word was heard from the speaker, and the light still stays on, it's possible that the wire that goes to the cab, got grounded somehow. I have seen wires get pinched by screws attaching the body to the chassis. Taking those out might cause the problem with the lighting to stop, then you know. If your not able to do that kind of troubleshooting, let me know, we will send a return UPS tag to repair your model.
